Technology Risk – Payments Assurance Senior Consultant / Payments Specialist

The opportunity

Technology is at the heart of modern financial services organisations. As a Senior Consultant within EY’s Technology Risk team, you will specialise in payments assurance, helping financial services clients assess and strengthen technology controls across critical payment systems, payment applications and payment processing environments.

You will support high-profile assurance and advisory engagements across areas such as payment assurance and attestation engagements, SWIFT CSP reviews, PSD2 assessments, IT internal audits, operational resilience reviews and regulatory remediation programmes.

Your key responsibilities

As a Senior Consultant, you will:

  • Deliver payment assurance and attestation engagements across financial services clients.
  • Support and execute SWIFT Customer Security Programme (CSP) reviews and PSD2-related assessments.
  • Assess the design and operating effectiveness of controls across payment systems, payment applications and supporting technology infrastructure.
  • Evaluate risks across payment operations, payment processing, settlement, reconciliation and financial crime control environments.
  • Perform technology risk assessments and IT internal audits with a focus on payments.
  • Analyse client processes, identify control weaknesses and provide practical recommendations for remediation.
  • Review and document payment architectures, interfaces, operational processes and key technology dependencies.
  • Support operational resilience and regulatory compliance assessments within payment environments.
  • Participate in client meetings, workshops and stakeholder interviews.
  • Produce high-quality workpapers, reports and client deliverables.
  • Support Managers and Senior Managers in engagement planning, testing execution and reporting.
  • Contribute to thought leadership, market research and development of EY's payment assurance methodologies.

  • Strong understanding of the payments landscape and emerging payment technologies.
  • Ability to identify technology and operational risks within payment ecosystems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and report-writing skills.
  • Experience gathering evidence, testing controls and documenting conclusions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with business, operations and technology stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality delivery.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams and priorities.
  • Collaborative approach and willingness to coach junior team members.
  • Interest in emerging technologies including cloud, AI and automation and their impact on payment environments.

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • Experience in Technology Risk, IT Audit, IT Controls, Risk Management or Payments Assurance.
  • Knowledge of payment systems and payment processing across national and cross-border payments.
  • Understanding of payment schemes including: Pay.UK (Bacs, Faster Payments, Image Clearing System); CHAPS; LINK; SWIFT; CREST; CASS and related payment services infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting or delivering:
    • Payment Assurance and Attestations
    • SWIFT CSP Reviews
    • PSD2 Audits
    • IT Internal Audits
    • Technology Risk Assessments
  • Understanding of IT General Controls (ITGCs), automated controls and Information Security controls.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Experience in report writing.
  • Experience working within a professional services firm, financial institution, fintech or payments organisation.

Ideally, you will also have

  • Experience in payment transformation or payment modernisation programmes.
  • Understanding of UK and EMEIA payment regulations and industry standards.
  • Experience with audit analytics and automated control testing.
  • Experience with Service Organisation Controls (SOC1, SOC2, ISAE3402) reporting.
  • Knowledge of cloud, AI and emerging technology risks.
  • Experience supporting large banking, capital markets, asset management or insurance clients.
  • Relevant certifications such as CISA; CISM; CISSP; CRISC; CGEIT; ITIL
