The opportunity

This is a new role is to work in the Global Tax function (Global Internal Tax Group – GITG) of the EY member firm network. Primarily, it is a long-term succession plan for an experienced senior manager working in a strategic role managing the tax aspects of partner secondments into EY Global but there is an additional opportunity to help support the team managing the substantial business traveler population of the EY network.

This role will report into the lead Tax Director responsible for managing cross border tax risk and the successful candidate will be part of a team that supports corporate tax, VAT and partnership taxation based primarily in the UK but has members in the US, Australia, Hong-Kong & Korea.

This new role has been created at the Assistant Director’s level for the new joiner to gain experience in all aspects of cross border personal taxation with a longer-term view of promotion to Senior Manager.

Your key responsibilities

Multi-jurisdictional expatriate tax and social security planning for EY Global’s senior leadership and associated partnerships with a focus on the US, UK and India. Close liaison with EY Global Mobility, EY GCO (General Counsel’s Office – the EY legal team). home/host country Talent and EY PAS tax teams to enable execution of such planning in full compliance with local country tax and social tax laws.

Provision of support and guidance to EY Global Mobility with interpretation of the Firm’s Global tax equalisation policy for senior level international assignees.

Management of EY Global’s Independent Non-Executive Directors payroll tax affairs in the UK.

Ad hoc tax technical work such as expatriate partner localisation computations.

EY business travellers - the EY network has a very significant business traveller population working on client engagements often in several jurisdictions on the same project. The GITG support CBTS (Cross Border Travel Support), an EY internal team who proactively manage all business travel support across the EY network.

In addition to traditional assignees therefore, the role will require the candidate to support the personal tax team analysing tax treaties, social tax agreements in conjunction with EY PAS and leveraging internally developed technology for standardizing advice and tax costs. The candidate will work very closely with the GITG corporate tax team who provide tax advice on Permanent Establishment issues which are a key focus for the EY network.

Skills and attributes for success

Technical

  • Practical expatriate tax experience gained from several years of exposure to UK expatriate tax compliance or working in an expatriate tax technical role with either the big 4 or smaller boutique expatriate tax firms.
  • US/UK dual handler expatriate tax compliance knowledge and experience would be an advantage but not necessary as training will be provided.
  • Experience of working with international tax treaties
  • Familiarity with UK expatriate payroll requirements and a sound knowledge of international social security rules, totalisation agreements, EU social tax legislation etc. is necessary.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of UK expatriate payroll requirements an advantage.

Other skills

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and
  • Good attention to detail.
  • The role requires working with EY PAS or internal expatriate tax experts who provide the expatriate tax compliance and technical support in multiple home and host countries. Tax planning, for which you will be responsible is often multi-jurisdictional and may not involve the UK.
  • You will need to be confident in speaking with senior leadership expatriate personnel to explain expatriate tax requirements, ensuring these are fully understood and that the partners comply with home/host expatriate tax rules and regulations.
