Job Description

Join us, be part of more.

We’re so much more than an energy company. We’re a family of brands revolutionising how we power the planet. We're energisers. One team of 21,000 colleagues that's energising a greener, fairer future by creating an energy system that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels, whilst living our powerful commitment to igniting positive change in our communities. Here, you can find more purpose, more passion, and more potential. That’s why working here is #MoreThanACareer. We do energy differently - we do it all. We make it, store it, move it, sell it, and mend it.

About your role:

Lead the strategic direction of health, safety and environmental (HSE) compliance across Centrica’s operations, championing a proactive safety culture, effective risk management, and continuous improvement aligned with legal and corporate requirements. The role reports to the HSE Director for Retail and works closely with Business Unit operational leaders through a matrix structure.

Responsibilities of the role:

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of HSE Specialists, promoting accountability, learning, and high performance.

  • Oversee the implementation of corporate HSE management systems, policies, standards, and procedures, collaborating with wider HSE teams to ensure effective local adoption.

  • Develop and deliver the annual HSE improvement plan with the HSE Director and operational leaders, ensuring alignment with the Centrica HSE Strategy, corporate improvement plans, and regulatory obligations.

  • Conduct and review risk assessments, working with Business Units to identify, evaluate, and control HSE risks in line with company procedures and risk appetite.

  • Support assurance activities across all lines of defence to verify compliance and drive improvement.

  • Provide expert HSE advice to senior leaders and operational teams.

  • Oversee contractor HSE management, ensuring strong governance and performance oversight.

  • Support management of change processes and the safe introduction of new products and services.

  • Develop and deliver HSE training and engagement programmes for employees and contractors.

  • Monitor, analyse, and report on HSE performance, using insights to inform decisions and improvement actions.

  • Collaborate with operational and group HSE teams to share learning, implement initiatives, and drive continual improvement.

  • Ensure incidents, near misses, and events are thoroughly investigated, root causes identified, and findings recorded in the Group HSE reporting system.

  • Represent Centrica in external forums, regulatory engagements, and industry groups.

  • Support the Retail HSE Director in fulfilling regulatory and governance responsibilities, including FCA senior managers and certification regime duties.

Here's what we’re looking for:

  • NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) in Occupational Health & Safety (essential); chartered status with IOSH or similar (desirable).

  • IOSH membership with evidence of ongoing CPD.

  • Significant experience in a senior HSE leadership role, ideally within energy, utilities, or construction.

  • Proven ability to lead teams, influence stakeholders, and drive organisational change.

  • Strong knowledge of UK/Irish HSE legislation, management systems (ISO 45001, ISO 14001), and industry best practice.

  • Demonstrated experience in incident investigation, risk management, and delivering measurable HSE improvements.

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Experience managing contractor HSE performance and compliance.
