Portfolio Profitability Analyst

Leicester or Windsor with FlexFirst hybrid working

Overview

British Gas Business (BGB) is the leading provider of energy to SMEs in the UK and is focused on helping its customers energising a greener, fairer future.

You will develop pricing strategies to meet customers' needs whilst providing a profit for the organization. Determining core business costs of service in support of pricing/tariff development and designing, implementing and maintaining pricing infrastructures. You will also evaluate the effectiveness of pricing strategies and then seek to modify pricing structures. Reporting is also part of your role.

You will be required to visit our Leicester and Windsor offices.

The Role

You role will include some of the following accountabilities whilst collaborating with different departments and functions.

Profitability Analysis:

Conduct in-depth analysis of the company's energy portfolio to identify profitable segments, pricing structures, and market trends.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyse sales margins and assess their impact on overall portfolio profitability.

Margin leakage analysis to understand and provide resolution paths to customers whose actual value does not match expected sales value.

Pricing maintenance – ensuring that all customers are on the right price at the right time through portfolio analysis by combining multiple complex datasets and identifying and understanding inconsistencies.

Contract Performance Evaluation:

Monitor and evaluate the performance of existing energy contracts, tracking revenue generation, costs, and margins.

Identify opportunities for contract optimisation and renegotiation to enhance profitability.

Ensure commercial terms offered to customers appropriately balance risk and return; and ensure terms are applied effectively to in order to deliver the expected outcome.

Financial Modelling:

Develop financial models to simulate different scenarios, allowing the company to understand the financial implications of various pricing strategies, contract terms, and market fluctuations.

Market Intelligence:

Stay updated on industry trends, market dynamics, and regulatory changes affecting energy pricing and profitability.

Supporting the Products and Pricing teams in setting strategy, reviewing performance and ideation.

P&L Analysis:

Analyse how sales margins translate into the company's Profit and Loss statement, identifying key drivers and areas for improvement.

Provide detailed insights to senior management on the financial health of the company's energy portfolio.

The Person

We would like you to have some of the following skills and experience for this role.

Work Experience:

Significant energy retail industry experience, ideally in a commercial, or strategic role.

Highly analytical with ability to simplify and solve complex, ambiguous problems.

Proven track record of cross-functional collaboration to drive performance and process improvement.

Commercially astute with an understanding of the energy P&L dynamics (COGS, OPEX, pricing strategies), customer lifetime value and key value drivers.

Advanced modelling and statistical analysis experience.

Education:

Degree in economics, mathematics, engineering, computer science or similar quantitative subject is preferred. Advanced degrees, PhD, MBA, CFA, CIMA desirable

Competencies:

Critical thinker, able to challenge the status quo and raise the bar for commercial capability.

Able to manage large, disparate datasets and manage multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously.

Comfortable with ambiguity, confident in making assumptions and working alongside teams employing agile methodology.

Proactive and self-directing.

Strong relationship building and stakeholder management skills.

Good communicator, able to translate complex technical concepts into easy-to-understand actions.
