Job Description

Join us, be part of more.

We’re so much more than an energy company. We’re a family of brands revolutionising how we power the planet. We're energisers. One team of 21,000 colleagues that's energising a greener, fairer future by creating an energy system that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels whilst living our powerful commitment to igniting positive change in our communities. Here, you can find more purpose, more passion, and more potential. That’s why working here is #MoreThanACareer. We do energy differently - we do it all. We make it, store it, move it, sell it, and mend it.

About your team:

We’re the pride of Ireland. Bord Gáis Energy have been powering the nation’s homes and businesses for almost 40 years. But now, we’re so much more than just gas and electric. Through our unique combination of household heroes and energy assets, we’re at the heart of the energy transition in Ireland, strengthening the country’s energy security and helping customers get ready for a net zero future.

We now have an opportunity for a Legal Counsel to join our retail business. Our retail business is at the forefront of designing products to meet customer needs and deploying the technology to reduce emissions. The work will be varied, high value and directly impact the business’s delivery, our customers and the Irish economy.

Location: Our Flexible First working model empowers our colleagues to find a better balance between home and office working. With a minimum of 2 days in our Dublin office, you can enjoy the convenience of working from home combined with time spent onsite in a way that works for you, our customers, and our business.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating the growth of BGE’s net zero ambitions by providing advice in the following areas:
    • contracts for the sale of innovative energy and services products, such as electric vehicle charging tariffs, solar and heat pump installations and micro-generation tariffs;
    • the delivery of deep home retrofits through our One Stop Shop products and network of suppliers;
    • the delivery of smart eco homes, through our Hive connected home products, including thermostats and electric vehicle chargers;
    • advising our award-winning marketing and sponsorship teams, including link-ups with the GAA, Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and brand influencers; and
    • developing partnerships with other large companies to provide offers to our Bord Gáis Energy Rewards Club members.
  • Supporting the Senior Legal Counsel on large commercial projects, including outsourcings and IT infrastructure agreements.
  • Supporting the Senior Legal Counsel managing escalated customer complaints as well as litigation in the Circuit and District Courts.
  • Advising, researching and reporting on the dynamic and fast moving legal and regulatory issues that underpin the energy markets.
  • Working with other members of the legal team to keep our precedents updated.

There will also be opportunities to broaden your skillset and develop your career by:

  • getting under the bonnet of one of Ireland’s largest energy suppliers by helping with company secretarial and board governance;
  • as part of a wider UK & Ireland team, supporting our market leading UK energy businesses.

Here’s who we’re looking for:

  • A professionally qualified lawyer with an Irish practising certificate is required. The responsibilities associated with this position would be suited to an individual with 2 to 4 years of post-qualification experience; however, BGE welcomes applications from all candidates interested in opportunities at this level.
  • In-house experience is desirable, but not essential.
  • A background in commercial law including drafting and negotiating contracts.
  • Commercially savvy lawyer with business facing experience of successfully delivering complex and high-profile matters in a fast-paced environment.
  • A working knowledge of the energy sector and one or more complementary areas of law, such as consumer or sector regulation, data protection, technology and digital, is also desirable but not essential.

Why should you apply?
