About the role

Information Governance is fundamental to ensuring BT International manages customer and business information as trusted strategic assets.

This role leads the development and execution of governance frameworks, operating models and governance controls covering Information Governance, Privacy Governance, Customer Data Governance and AI Governance.

The Information Governance & Data Governance Principal drives adoption of governance practices across Product, Delivery, Legal, Technology and Security teams, establishes clear accountability for information governance obligations and enables BT International to deliver secure, compliant and trusted digital services.

The role owns the BT International Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) governance process, leads the BT International Data & AI Council and provides governance leadership across Customer Data Handling, Data Sovereignty and AI Governance.

What you’ll be doing

Information Governance Leadership

  • Develop and continuously improve BT International's Information Governance framework.
  • Define governance operating models supporting the management of customer and business information throughout its lifecycle.
  • Drive Information Governance maturity improvements across BT International.
  • Organize and manage Data governance forums and cross-functional Data and AI related governance activities.
  • Promote governance by design across strategic programmes and business initiatives.

Privacy & Customer Data Governance

  • Own and govern the BT International Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) process.
  • Review, challenge and approve Privacy Impact Assessments.
  • Lead governance of Customer Data Handling obligations across BT International.
  • Ensure Privacy by Design principles are embedded into new products, services and strategic programmes.
  • Provide governance guidance relating to:

Data Governance

  • Establish governance frameworks supporting trusted customer and business information.
  • Drive accountability across Information Owners, Product Teams and Delivery Units.
  • Resolve governance ownership and accountability challenges across organisational boundaries.
  • Monitor governance maturity and oversee Delivery Unit-led improvement activities.

Risk, Regulation & Compliance

  • Ensure Information Governance controls support contractual, regulatory and legal obligations.
  • Lead Information Governance aspects of customer audits and regulatory assessments.
  • Support implementation of Privacy, AI Governance and Information Governance controls.
  • Drive management of Information Governance risks across BT International.

AI Governance

  • Lead governance supporting the safe, responsible and compliant adoption of Artificial Intelligence across BT International.
  • Ensure governance requirements are embedded within AI, analytics and digital transformation programmes.
  • Promote responsible and ethical use of customer and business information within AI-enabled services.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering and Security teams to embed governance by design.

Data & AI Council

  • Assure operation and continuous development of the BT International Data & AI Council
  • Prepare governance papers, executive reporting and meeting outcomes.
  • Coordinate governance activities and action tracking across business stakeholders.

Leadership & People

  • Lead and develop BT International's Information Governance capability.
  • Coach and mentor Information Governance professionals.
  • Build governance awareness across BT International through education, stakeholder engagement and knowledge sharing.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, transparency and responsible information management.

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Significant experience leading enterprise Information Governance or Data Governance programmes.
  • Experience within telecommunications or other highly regulated industries.
  • Deep understanding of Information Governance frameworks, operating models and governance controls.
  • Experience governing Privacy Impact Assessments and Privacy by Design.
  • Experience governing Customer Data Handling, Data Sovereignty and information lifecycle management.
  • Experience working with executive stakeholders and influencing at Director level.
  • Strong understanding of contractual, regulatory and privacy requirements impacting information management.
  • Experience leading cross-functional governance and business transformation initiatives.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication and executive presentation skills.

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Experience supporting AI Governance and Responsible AI initiatives.
  • Understanding of Information Security and Data Protection frameworks.
  • Experience supporting ISO 27001 or Information Security Management Systems (ISMS).
  • Professional certifications in Information Governance, Privacy or Data Governance (e.g. DAMA CDMP, DCAM, CIPM, CIPP/E or equivalent).

Develop sustainable Information Governance capabilities supporting BT International's transformation, Global Fabric strategy and AI ambitions.

Being Trusted
Act as BT International's senior authority for Information Governance, Privacy Governance and Customer Data Governance, promoting ethical, secure and responsible management of information across the organisation.
