Why this job matters

This role is primarily focused at supporting the BT International business in the APAC region, working on both regulatory and commercial legal matters. This role assists with assessing and monitoring BT’s regulatory obligations in this region and helping ensure compliance. It also requires first class commercial legal and contractual advice for BT’s business activities in the region, including bid and procurement matters. The role works on a variety of matters as part of a regional team of lawyers and regulatory experts, whilst also being involved in delivery of global regulatory projects and programs.

What you’ll be doing – your accountabilities

  • Ensure regulatory compliance for BT in APAC in relation to telecommunications regulation (including statutory reporting and licensing obligations) and by working with other regulatory specialists.
  • Provide regulatory input and advice where required in (a) the negotiation and delivery of global bids and business contracts; and (b) the deployment of global products and services.
  • Liaise with relevant authorities and other stakeholders in the telecommunications industry.
  • Provide commercial, contractual and legal advice to negotiate and deliver effective contracts with BT’s customers, partners, distributors, and key suppliers.
  • Help manage offshore legal support and external lawyers supplying services for APAC.
  • Develop best practice for commercial transactions, including risk management, precedents, templates, business training and know-how.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments relevant to the business and provide advice on their impact and risk mitigation.
  • Lead and/or support as appropriate on specific projects with legal or regulatory impact.

The skills you’ll need to succeed

Required

  • Excellent drafting, analytical and communication skills.
  • Great relationship management and communication skills with ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work as part of a regional and international team.
  • Good understanding of one or more ICT regulatory frameworks in APAC.
  • Commercial contracts drafting and legal advisory.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong project and program management skills.

Desirable

  • Good understanding of the key issues in regulation, and awareness of applicable international regulations and trends impacting telecommunications providers.
  • Good understanding of commercial drivers for international ICT business.
  • Additional language skills relevant to APAC markets (e.g. Mandarin) are an added advantage; for supporting communication with Mandarin-speaking stakeholders in the APAC region.

Experience you’d be expected to have

  • Recognised legal degree and ability to work as corporate counsel in Malaysia.
  • Training with a leading legal practice.
  • Appropriate post graduate legal and regulatory experience.
  • Experience in the ICT industry and with commercial law (e.g. IT/IP/DP) beneficial.

Leadership accountabilities

  • Lead day-to-day engagement with BT internal and external stakeholders on regulatory issues.
  • Consider legal and regulatory issues and communicate them verbally and in writing.
  • Build stakeholder relationships to align business strategy with legal requirements and regulatory policy.

Key decisions

  • Provide internal advice on day-to-day commercial and regulatory issues to the BT International line of business
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Input into commercial negotiations and bid approvals.
  • Understand when to escalate issues.
