Networks Cost Modelling and Analytics Specialist
Job Description
Hybrid 3 days a week together out of our Birmingham Snow Hill offices (flexible 2 days remote wherever).
About the role
Join a team that helps shape how one of the UK's largest networks invests, grows and delivers value.
As a Network Cost Modelling Specialist, you'll combine network knowledge, commercial insight and analytical expertise to influence major business decisions. You'll develop and maintain cost models that provide a clear understanding of how costs are incurred and allocated across BT's products, services and network infrastructure.
This is a role for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, challenging assumptions and translating technical concepts into meaningful business outcomes. You'll work closely with engineers, architects, finance teams and senior stakeholders, building a deep understanding of how BT's fixed, mobile and core networks operate and how costs flow through them.
A key part of the role will be translating complex network architectures into robust cost modelling frameworks. You'll develop models that reflect network topology, traffic flows and underlying cost drivers, enabling the business to make informed commercial, investment and strategic decisions.
Whether you're enhancing existing models, developing new capabilities or supporting major business decisions, your work will provide the insight that underpins how BT understands, manages and allocates network costs.
What you’ll be doing
- Developing, maintaining and enhancing cost models that support commercial, regulatory and strategic decision-making.
- Translating complex network architectures into cost modelling frameworks that accurately reflect network topology, traffic flows and cost causality.
- Refactoring and improving existing modelling solutions to increase accuracy, efficiency and scalability.
- Gathering requirements from stakeholders and translating business needs into analytical and modelling solutions.
- Working closely with network engineers, architects, finance teams and subject matter experts to understand network costs and cost drivers.
- Analysing large and complex datasets to identify trends, opportunities, risks and insights.
- Automating recurring modelling and reporting processes where appropriate.
- Applying collaborative development practices, including version control, testing and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Presenting findings, recommendations and modelling outcomes to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Supporting the ongoing evolution of modelling methodologies, tools and analytical capabilities.
Essential Skills / Experience
- Proven experience developing, maintaining and enhancing models of complex real-world systems to generate analytical insights and support business decision-making.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to gather requirements, translate business needs into analytical solutions, and communicate insights effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand complex technical environments and translate them into robust modelling approaches.
- Experience automating recurring reporting, analysis or modelling processes using Python, SQL or Excel VBA.
Desirable Skills / Experience
- Commercial background of advanced Excel and Python practices, with experience working with large and complex datasets.
- Delivery-focused mindset with experience supporting Agile project delivery, using tools such as Jira or Trello to organise, prioritise, track and manage workflows, ensuring activity is delivered efficiently and to agreed timelines.
- Experience within telecommunications, network infrastructure or technology environments.
- Understanding of fixed, mobile and core network architectures.
- Experience allocating and modelling costs across products, services or technology platforms.
- Commercial background of network topology, traffic flows and cost causality principles.
- Experience applying data analysis and statistical forecasting techniques to model trends, develop projections and support decision-making, particularly where data inputs are incomplete or future outcomes require informed assumptions.
- Experience working within collaborative development environments using version control, testing and CI/CD practices.
- Experience using R.
- Experience influencing commercial, strategic or investment decisions through data-led recommendations.
