Job Description

Please be noted there are two fixed term level 1.5 Engineer roles open in Perth. The duration are 12 months and 24 months respectively.

Role Overview

The Level 1.5 Network Support Engineer provides frontline operational support for critical network infrastructure in a large-scale mining environment operating 24×7. This role serves as the initial technical response point for network incidents, ensuring timely restoration of services that support autonomous mining systems, fleet communications, process control systems, safety platforms, and site‑wide IT/OT networks.

The engineer is responsible for first‑level analysis, remote troubleshooting, incident response, and coordination with mine controllers, field technician and other stakeholders across mining sites, processing plants, pit operations and Rail operations. The role requires strong situational awareness, process discipline, and the ability to operate effectively under pressure in a real-time operational environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor network performance, alarms, and events via NMS dashboards and monitoring/Tshoot tools (SolarWinds, DNAC, PRTG, BitLab IMS, etc..)
  • Validate alerts, eliminate false positives, and identify issues requiring escalation.
  • Conduct first‑level diagnosis of connectivity issues, hardware faults, or RF‑related problems.
  • Assess impact to mining operations, including AHS,ADS remote operations, and safety systems.
  • Respond to network incidents in a 24×7 operational environment within defined SLAs.
  • Perform initial fault isolation on:
    • Switches, routers, firewalls
    • Fibre, microwave, and wireless transmission field links
    • LTE / Private 4G/5G nodes and end devices
    • Wi‑Fi access points across mining infrastructure
  • Gather logs, screenshots, counters, and diagnostics for Level 2/3 escalation.
  • Coordinate hands‑on tasks with onsite technicians (resets, patching, hardware swaps under change managment changes guidelines).
  • Perform basic configuration tasks under guidance (port enables, VLANs, interface checks).
  • Assist with SIM swaps, SIM provisioning checks, modem resets, and device registration updates.
  • Maintain OC ticket hygiene: impact notes, timelines, categorisation, and closure documentation.
  • Support maintenance windows, planned outages, and change activities.
  • Opening SAP request for L2 and other stakeholders with site.
  • Keep documentation, diagrams, and inventories updated.
  • Provide first‑level troubleshooting for network connectivity issues impacting AHS, ADS drills, fleet systems (tablets/IVMS/modems), SCADA/OT devices, CCTV, and IoT sensors across pit and plant areas.
  • Assist field technicians with remote diagnostics across pits, haul roads, and infrastructure corridors, including coverage checks, basic RF validation, and remote modem/antenna inspections.
  • Escalate complex mining‑technology issues to specialised engineering teams with complete diagnostic information.

  • Strictly follow mine‑site safety protocols, especially when coordinating field activities.
  • Ensure compliance with operational, cybersecurity, and change management standards.
  • Report hazards, near misses, and safety issues as required by HSE policies.
  • Maintain accurate logs for audit and availability reporting.

The technical skills needed

  • 2–5 years of technical support or NOC experience.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills, especially when working with field operators and engineers.
  • Ability to stay calm, methodical, and structured during live outage scenarios.
  • Strong documentation habits and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and grow technical capabilities.
  • Preferred :
    • Cisco CCNA
      Cisco CCNAP (or working towards)
    • CompTIA Network+
    • Fundamentals of LTE/Private Wireless
  • Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.

Experience you would be expected to have

  • Previous experience in a NOC or Level 1/1.5 network support role.
  • Experience in mining, oil & gas, utilities, or remote industrial environments.
  • Understanding of OT networks (SCADA, PLCs, telemetry systems) is highly desirable.
  • Prior exposure to shift-based or 24×7 operational environments.
  • Experience in ticketing-tools like Service Now, and exposure to ITIL processes in context of service operations is a plus
  • Diploma in a relevant field is Acceptable
