The Environment & Sustainability Manager is pivotal in maintaining BT’s ISO14001 accreditation, underpinning environmental compliance and supporting contracts worth over £3 billion. This role ensures the effective management of BT’s Environmental Management System (EMS), with a focus on Waste Management and the Natural Environment. The postholder will lead cross-functional coordination, drive key forums and working groups, and manage internal audit actions, including the closure of major non-conformances. The role also supports BT’s Group HSE policy and broader ESG initiatives, including biodiversity and sustainability programmes.

This role is a fixed term contract for 12 months.

What you’ll be doing

  • Serve as Site Aspect Lead for BT’s EMS, overseeing Waste Management and Natural Environment sub-aspects.
  • Maintain ISO14001 accreditation and ensure ongoing compliance with environmental legislation (e.g., Simpler Recycling, Deposit Return Scheme).
  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams and working groups (e.g., Site Aspect Working Group, Waste CIP, EWSPR).
  • Manage internal audit actions, including the closure of non-conformances.
  • Support the delivery of BT’s Group HSE policy and ESG initiatives, including biodiversity and sustainability programmes.
  • Provide specialist advice and guidance on environmental risks, compliance, and best practice.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators, audit actions, and compliance status.
  • Develop and deliver communications, training, and guidance to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure all relevant policies, procedures, and processes are up to date and compliant with statutory and business requirements.
  • Support the development and implementation of environmental projects and initiatives (e.g., waste management, protected species guidance).

You'll have the following skills and experience

  • Proven experience in environmental management, ideally within a large, multi-site organisation. Experience in developing and delivering training, guidance, and communications.

  • Experience in developing and implementing environmental projects to deliver continual improvements
  • Give specialised advice - You offer advice and recommendations based on your expertise both proactively and on request.

  • Stakeholder engagement - Experience leading cross-functional teams and managing complex projects. Excellent communication, research, and negotiation skills. Ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Understanding of regulatory framework - You will have a good understanding and application of all relevant regulatory and assurance frameworks, including ISO 14001 and 5001. Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, and compliance frameworks.

  • Data analysis: Ability to analyse data, identify trends, and drive continual improvement.

  • Professional qualifications – You will idealy hold a degree in Environmental Science or related field; ISEP practitioner (formerly IEMA) or equivalent desirable
