About the role

Defending BT Group against cyber-attacks is the focus of PBT Cyber Operations. BT faces threats from the full range of threat actors from sophisticated threat nation state actors developing their tactics to new heights and targeting our industry, through to criminal groups seeking to monetize efforts attacks on BT and customers, to hacktivist groups who see BT as a visible UK and impactful UK target. It is the role of the Cyber Threat Intelligence Group (CTIG) to understand and track this ever-evolving threat landscape. Our Capability Development Team is key part of this equipping us with the tools to do carry out this function and keep BT Group and the UK critical networks safe. BT takes a threat led approach to cyber security. Intelligence generated within CTIG to identify, prioritise and track those threats which are of greatest significance to BT drives security decision making impacting all levels of the organization.

As a large, distributed, multinational IT-based company, BT has a unique view of global cyber threat, including data sets that have never been available to the industry before. We are developing novel and sophisticated ways of analyzing this data to ensure we stay ahead in this exciting and challenging environment. As an experienced data engineer, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining data pipelines, so that this highly skilled team of data scientists, data engineers and developers, continue to generate unique, innovative and impactful intelligence.


This role is hybrid (3 days in office) & can be based in either Bristol or Manchester

What you’ll be doing

  • Developing and maintaining Data Pipelines for extraction, transformation and loading processes
  • Assembling large, complex data sets that meet user and business requirements
  • Collaborating with data scientists and intelligence analysts, to support and deliver against their requirements
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements to enhance data delivery and scalability
  • Build and maintain collaboration partnerships with internal and external working groups on data analysis and big data platforms.
  • Responsible for contributing towards delivering tools and analytics needed to generate world class threat intelligence
  • Committed to the continual improvement of BT's capability to operationally exploit tools and data to better Protect BT, its business and reputation.
  • Accountable to Cyber Threat Intelligence Capability Development Manager to ensure that data pipelines are developed and maintained, for users to generate world-class threat intelligence.

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Experience of working with big data and data analytics.
  • In-depth knowledge of data analysis platforms and tooling.
  • Strong communication skills, able to articulate complex technical requirements to a range of audiences
  • Typically qualified to degree level, or equivalent professional experience.

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Track Record in working with Big Data technologies and tools utilized for handling large datasets.
  • Proficiency in programming and debugging/troubleshooting complex issues.
  • Expertise in Data Processing frameworks and schema design.
  • Experience with Data Ingestion tools and developing robust data pipelines.
  • Familiarity with Data Science tools and techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and able to work through issues in a logical manner, documenting solutions as required.
  • Demonstrable experience of continuous improvement, process optimization and automation.
