Due to the sensitive nature of this role, you will be required to undergo DV (Developed Vetting) level Security Clearance (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/united-kingdom-security-vetting-clearance-levels/national-security-vetting-clearance-levels). An allowance of £5k per annum may be payable monthly while you hold this DV and continue to work in a role that requires that level of security clearance. The terms of this allowance will be made available if you are successful in being recruited into this role.

About the role
As a Data Science Specialist within the Security Technology Office, you will help BT unlock greater value from its data and accelerate the adoption of AI across complex operational environments. Working across a diverse portfolio of projects, you will provide hands-on data science and AI expertise to solve challenging problems and deliver meaningful mission outcomes.
You will bring a scientific mindset to your work, using exploratory data analysis, experimentation and technical expertise to uncover insights and develop innovative solutions. Your ideas, experience and judgement will help shape project direction, identify new opportunities and contribute to the ongoing evolution of our Data & AI capability.
This job role can be based in Cheltenham, Ipswich or Manchester. Due to security requirements, this role requires you to be located on site during your working hours. Mon-Fri 37.5. DV Security Clearance is required. Must have lived in UK for 10+ years to obtain clearance.
What you’ll be doing
- Apply data science and AI techniques to solve complex business and operational challenges.
- Perform exploratory data analysis to uncover insights, patterns and opportunities.
- Work closely with project teams to understand problems and define data-driven approaches.
- Turn data and analysis into clear recommendations and actionable outcomes.
- Evaluate emerging AI capabilities and identify where they can create value.

Essential
- Experience applying data science techniques to solve complex real-world problems.
- Strong Python and Linux skills and experience with common data science and machine learning libraries.
- Experience developing, testing and deploying machine learning models.
- Knowledge of AI technologies, including generative AI and large language models.
Desirable
- Experience working with large-scale datasets and distributed data processing platforms such as Hadoop or Spark.
- Knowledge of MLOps, CI/CD pipelines and container technologies.
- Experience working with geospatial, time-series or graph data.
- Experience mentoring others and sharing technical knowledge across teams.
