About the role

You day to day role is to design and deliver solutions for BT’s customers. Your automation design work will specialise in network solutions. Our customers are generally external customers so you will be recognised with that enhanced level of visibility and responsibility.

We are seeking a skilled and forward-thinking Automation Engineer to join our growing engineering team. This role is focused on designing, developing, and maintaining scalable automation solutions across our infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and configuration management.
You will play a key role in driving efficiency, consistency, and reliability across complex enterprise environments, working closely with network, cloud, and delivery teams.

You’ll be working as part of a dedicated team that spans the globe. As a design Specialist, you’ll be responsible for delivering medium to large automation designs. Working with other designers you may even be the design lead who will be expected to review all components and then deliver the overall design. As a Specialist, you will have an expert knowledge of the overall automation design. You will contribute to technical discussions within the team and customer, leading others towards a better understanding and encouraging a dialogue to improve the design principles used in the team. You will be required to impart your design principles towards a more senior level, shaping our future direction.

What you’ll be doing

• Design and implement automation solutions using Ansible, Terraform, and other IaC tools
• Develop reusable playbooks, roles, and modules to support infrastructure and application deployment
• Automate provisioning of cloud and on-premise infrastructure (compute, network, storage)
• Integrate automation into CI/CD pipelines to enable continuous delivery
• Collaborate with network and platform engineers to automate provisioning and configuration of:
o Network infrastructure (including Cisco environments)
o Cloud services (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
• Maintain and enhance existing automation frameworks, ensuring scalability and reliability
• Troubleshoot automation failures and optimise performance
• Promote automation best practices and mentor teams on adoption
• Ensure compliance with security, governance, and operational standards

Essential Skills / Experience

• Strong hands-on experience with:
o Ansible (playbooks, roles, AWX/Tower)
o Terraform (modules, state management, workspaces)
• Solid understanding of Infrastructure as Code principles
• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred / AWS / GCP)
• Scripting skills in Python, Bash, or PowerShell
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools (e.g., Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GitHub Actions)
• Knowledge of version control systems (Git)
• Experience working in Agile / DevOps environments
• Understanding of networking concepts (routing, switching, firewalls)

Desirable Skills / Experience

• Experience with additional automation tools (e.g., Puppet, Chef, SaltStack)
• Exposure to Kubernetes / container orchestration
• Experience with API integrations and automation
• Knowledge of SD-WAN, ACI, or network programmability
• Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools
• Certifications in cloud platforms or automation (HashiCorp, Red Hat, etc.)
