Role Description:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Safety Engineer to join our maritime sustainment business, working on the newest ship platform, the Hobart Class DDG naval ships. Reporting to the Engineering Team Lead, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate safety engineering technical skills, and you will be employed on a permanent full time basis.

Core Duties:

  • Lead the identification and assessment of safety engineering hazards, and the development of mitigation strategies
  • Provide senior technical advice on safety engineering activities and safety engineering methodologies performed
  • Collaborate and build good relationships with the customer, industry partners, internal and external stakeholders, maintaining a positive culture within the program
  • Conduct the technical review of safety engineering system artefacts and design changes
  • Establish and maintain systems safety engineering programs, ensuring compliance with governance, legal and customer requirements
  • Undertake the development and maintenance of engineering product safety risk assessments, and undertake safety hazard identification
  • Report on the implementation of mitigation strategies and support investigations to close our product safety reports

Essential Skills:

  • Extensive safety engineering/product safety experience – Experience in other engineering disciplines will also be considered
  • A relevant tertiary engineering degree, self-starter and good problem solving skills
  • Technical leadership experience and an understanding of safety engineering standards such as MIL-STD-882
  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills, the ability to effectively convey information, develop good relationships and influence outcomes
  • Whilst not essential, naval ship or defence industry experience, will be highly regarded

The Maritime Destroyer Capability Enhancement (DCE) team

Under the Destroyer Capability Enhancement (DCE) program, Australia’s Hobart class destroyers — HMA Ships Hobart, Brisbane and Sydney, will receive advancements that will boost capability to ensure they remain effective in a dynamic maritime environment
