About the OPPORTUNITY

We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Trade Trainer to join our Osborne Shipyard based at Osborne SA, working on Naval Ship Build and Naval Sustainment Projects reporting to the Mechanical Trade Manager.

We embrace flexible work arrangements at BAE Systems Australia, including working a 9-day fortnight.

You will be responsible for training and mentoring new starters, apprentices, and trainees in the mechanical fitting trade, playing a vital role in shaping the next generation of shipbuilders. Through your guidance, they will develop the technical skills, industry knowledge, and safety practices required to become confident and capable professionals.

Key responsibilities include:

Deliver Training and Instruction

  • Teach both theoretical and practical aspects of mechanical fitting, including interpreting technical drawings, using hand and power tools, machining, and precision measurement techniques.

Assess Competency

  • Conduct practical assessments, written tests, and on-the-job observations to evaluate skill levels against industry standards.
  • Provide clear, constructive feedback to support continuous improvement.
  • Maintain accurate records of trainee progress and assessment outcomes.

Mentor and Support Apprentices

  • Guide apprentices in developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and professional work habits.
  • Promote a positive, collaborative learning environment focused on teamwork, communication, and work ethic.
  • Offer support and guidance to help trainees navigate training challenges.

Promote Safety and Compliance

  • Instruct trainees in safe work practices, including correct use of tools, machinery, and PPE.
  • Ensure all training activities comply with WHS regulations, industry standards, and company policies.

Develop Training Materials

  • Create and update training resources, lesson plans, and hands-on exercises to reflect current technologies and best practices in the industry.

Engage with Stakeholders

  • Liaise with supervisors to track apprentice performance and ensure training aligns with workplace expectations and project needs.

About YOU

  • Proven subject matter expertise within the mechanical fitting or related engineering industry.
  • Possession of a relevant Certificate III or equivalent trade qualification (or higher) aligned to the role.
  • Extensive post-qualification experience in the engineering mechanical fitting field, demonstrating practical industry knowledge and hands-on proficiency.
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) or its successor, or equivalent qualification/skill sets as defined by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), or a willingness to obtain the required certification.
  • A current NV1 clearance or eligibility to obtain.
  • Eligibility to be cleared for International Traffic in Arms (ITAR) regulations.
