Job Description

The Direct Tax Manager plays a critical role in delivering ASOS’s global direct tax agenda. Operating as a senior individual contributor, the role has responsibility for direct tax compliance and reporting, supports the development of ASOS’s tax and transfer pricing strategy, ensures accurate IFRS‑based tax accounting, and provides high‑quality tax insight and advice to Finance and the wider business. The role also contributes to ASOS’s tax transformation initiatives, helping modernise processes and improve data integrity across the tax lifecycle.

The Details

Sitting within the Tax team, the role is responsible for the end‑to‑end management of direct tax compliance, reporting and risk management across the UK and overseas. This includes working closely with external advisors on the preparation and submission of tax returns and transfer pricing documentation, ensuring accurate IFRS tax reporting and disclosures, providing technical support on business initiatives, and supporting tax authority enquiries.

The role partners extensively with Finance to ensure correct reporting of tax balances, and with Tax Transformation to design and embed future‑fit processes. It also works with wider business teams to ensure initiatives are appropriately assessed and implemented from a direct tax and transfer pricing perspective.

Direct Tax Compliance & Reporting

  • Oversee the preparation and submission of UK and overseas direct tax returns (and associated returns), working with advisors and preparing filings in-house where appropriate.
  • Ensure accurate end‑to‑end tax accounting under IFRS, including tax disclosures, direct tax balance sheet reconciliations and data integrity of underlying information.
  • Prepare high‑quality tax papers, forecasts, and insights for the CFO and Audit Committee.

Transfer Pricing & International Tax

  • Work with advisors on transfer pricing strategy, documentation and implementation.
  • Provide technical input on cross‑border business initiatives, permanent establishment risk and structural changes.

Business Partnering & Advisory

  • Partner with commercial, finance, wider tax and operational teams to assess tax implications of business initiatives, ensuring risks and opportunities are identified and appropriately managed.
  • Provide clear, practical advice that supports decision‑making and value creation.

Tax Risk Management & Governance

  • Identify potential tax risks and cash saving opportunities, leading initiatives to manage or realise these.
  • Manage communications with HMRC and overseas tax authorities.
  • Support external auditors by providing timely and accurate documentation.

Process Improvement & Transformation

  • Collaborate with Tax Transformation and the broader Tax team to identify, design, and implement improvements to direct tax processes, controls, data flows and reporting.
  • Contribute to ASOS’s broader tax modernisation agenda, helping build scalable, future‑fit compliance and reporting frameworks.

Culture & Ways of Working

  • Supporting our culture by championing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion strategies.

We believe being together in person helps us move faster, connect more deeply, and achieve more as a team. That’s why our approach to working together includes spending at least 3 days a week in the office. It’s a rhythm that speeds up decision-making, helps ASOSers learn from each other more quickly, and builds the kind of culture where people can grow, create, and succeed.

Qualifications

About You

  • A tax or accounting qualification (preferably CTA or ACA) with substantial experience.
  • Strong technical awareness of UK direct tax, IFRS tax reporting, and a good understanding of transfer pricing and international tax.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience business partnering with commercial and finance teams.
  • High standard of accuracy with financial data and the ability to interpret detail into meaningful insights.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise under tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication, influencing and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexible, proactive and comfortable working in an environment of change.

Technology

Experience with data‑enabled tax tools (e.g., Power BI, Alteryx), ERP systems (e.g., Dynamics), or automation technologies is advantageous but not essential.
