Job Description
Purpose/Summary:
Under Supervision, the Operations Intern will support terminal, marine, and stevedoring activities to ensure safe, efficient, and cost‑effective daily operations across vessel, yard, rail, and gate functions. This role assists in monitoring labor, documenting operational performance, and ensuring compliance with safety, security, and regulatory requirements. The intern will gain hands‑on experience in operational planning, labor coordination, equipment utilization, and incident/grievance handling within a fast‑paced terminal environment. This position provides exposure to real‑time decision‑making, cross‑functional collaboration, and continuous improvement of terminal productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
Under supervision, you may perform the following:
- Support daily vessel, yard, rail, and gate operations by assisting Foremen/Supervisors with labor coordination, productivity tracking, and equipment utilization.
- Help prepare, distribute, and communicate operational plans, vessel stowage plans, and shift updates to management, labor, and customers.
- Participate in safety checks, vessel walk‑throughs, gangway talks, and reporting of unsafe equipment or incidents.
- Assist in documenting labor hours, production counts, delays, and operational deviations for reporting and billing accuracy.
- Support investigation and resolution of safety incidents, operational delays, and labor grievances by gathering facts and documenting outcomes.
- Track compliance with regulatory requirements, including OSHA and CFR 105, and support distribution of hazardous, reefer, or customs-related documentation.
- Coordinate with terminal management to facilitate training, communication, and workflow alignment across multiple operational units.
- Participate in meetings, operational reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives related to labor efficiency and terminal performance.
- Prepare and organize operational statements, plans, and reports following cargo operations.
- Any other duties as assigned by management.
Critical Qualifications/Skills/Experience:
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s in supply chain, Maritime Studies, Business, Logistics, or related field. (December/May 2027 graduates)
- Prior experience in transportation, supply chain, warehousing, port operations, or military service is a plus but not required for internship hiring.
- Eligible to work in the US
Technical Skills and Competencies Required
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and mobile applications.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to multitask, adapt to change quickly, and problem solve in real time.
- Strong teamwork, collaboration, and interpersonal skills when working with labor, supervisors, and management.
- Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and contribute to operational decision‑making.
FLSA Status : Non-exempt
Work Schedule: Interns will work full-time during the summer and part-time during the academic year. No overtime.
Salary: $25 - $30/hr

The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and work at a computer terminal. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Should be able to hear & speak clearly using phone / headset to communicate with customers; be able to navigate, view & enter information on the computer. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. General office setting, typically the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work, usually at a computer terminal – with short breaks or lunch period. However, there may be some bending/stooping, reaching above shoulder level, walking; standing; carrying of light items such as papers, books or packages of up to 25 pounds.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally have to withstand exposure to outdoor/adverse working conditions. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; extreme heat and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally noisy.
Internships are to provide meaningful training and work experience for college/Master’s/PhD students pursuing academic studies. Interns are not eligible for employee benefits. Interns are “at will” and can be terminated at the discretion of the company with or without cause or with or without prior notice.
