Job Description

APM Terminals

Head of Energy Category Management

We are looking for a Head of Energy Category Management to lead one of the most strategically important categories in our decarbonization and cost leadership journey. This role will own the electricity and renewable energy supply category strategy, supporting both APM Terminals and the wider Maersk organization in achieving our dual ambition: reaching 100% renewable electricity by 2030 while actively managing and reducing electricity spend.

This is a high-impact role for someone who can combine commercial discipline, market insight, sustainability ambition, and strong stakeholder leadership to shape how we source, manage, and optimize energy across our global footprint.

Why This Role Matters

Energy is at the center of both our operational performance and our sustainability commitments. As electricity markets become more complex and renewable energy options continue to evolve, we need strong category leadership to help us make the right strategic, commercial, and operational decisions.

In this role, you will help translate our long term supply requirements and renewable electricity commitments into practical sourcing strategies, supplier partnerships, policies, and solutions that deliver measurable progress. You will also play a key role in protecting the business from volatility, proactively addressing supply constraints, identifying cost reduction opportunities, and ensuring that our renewable electricity claims are supported by strong data, documentation, and governance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and own the commercial electricity strategy for APM Terminals and Maersk, leading the development of the energy category roadmap. Provide guidance to the organization on sourcing models, pricing, renewable electricity options, supply security, policies, EAC/REC/GO sourcing, and hedging. Ensure that APM Terminals and Maersk are positioned to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2030 in line with RE100 commitments.

  • Lead major energy sourcing projects and negotiations, including RFP, RFQ, and contracting processes. This will include traditional utility contracts, PPAs, onsite energy solutions, green tariff agreements, BESS/microgrid opportunities, and other relevant solutions in the renewable energy space.

  • Own the data and insight agenda for the category. This includes creating visibility of the sourcing pipeline, managing solution documentation for audit and reporting purposes, keeping the organization informed on renewable electricity uptake and financial performance, and providing market insights on prices, forecasts, and developments to support growth projects, budgeting, and strategic decisions. In addition, the role will contribute to Maersk’s policy positions on Electricity and Renewable Energy.

  • Establish and govern supplier relationship management with key regional and global suppliers, managing supplier tiering, segmentation, and innovation opportunities. Structure partnerships within the port, terminal, and electricity ecosystem to support our long term ambitions and requirements. A key part of the role will be to explore new renewable energy technologies and ensure they are considered where they can support the category strategy and the dual mandate of renewable electricity uptake and cost management.

Success in this role will be measured through strategic, financial, and operational outcomes, including electricity cost reductions, renewable electricity coverage, emissions impact, supplier innovation, project delivery timelines, solution mix, and financial impact versus market benchmarks.

Who you will work with

You will work closely with a broad group of internal and external stakeholders to ensure that energy sourcing strategies are practical, aligned, and effectively executed. You will collaborate with the Maersk Energy Transition team and the APM Terminals Decarbonization COE to align on requirements, standards, policies, and strategy. You and your team will work hand in hand with Terminal procurement managers and LnS procurement managers to execute projects and integrate energy sourcing requirements into local plans. Externally, you will engage with strategic suppliers to build strong partnerships, manage performance, and identify opportunities for innovation in renewable electricity and energy solutions.

What We Are Looking For

  • Experienced category leader: You bring senior procurement/category management experience, ideally 10+ years, with a strong track record in electricity markets and implementation of renewable energy solutions. European power market expertise (structures, regulations, procurement mechanisms) is a plus.

  • Strategic thinker: Able to translate long-term sustainability ambitions into practical sourcing and commercial strategies. Comfortable navigating complex market dynamics and balancing competing priorities. Comfortable managing complex information and communicating clearly at an executive level internally.

  • Cost & Risk Management Focused: Proven ability to deliver cost savings, value creation, and risk management outcomes. Strong negotiation, contracting, and supplier management capabilities.

  • Influential leader: Builds credibility with your own team, senior stakeholders across functions, regions, and business units. Aligns diverse stakeholders behind a common strategy and drives execution through influence.

  • Innovative & Outcome-Focused: Curious about emerging technologies and new market opportunities.

  • Continuous improvement mindset: we are looking for someone who brings a thoughtful improvement mindset, curious about how work gets done and motivated to make meaningful, sustainable improvements over time.

  • Leadership expectation: We are looking for people who consistently put customers first, lead by example with respect for people, deliver results with integrity, and drive continuous improvement by solving problems at the root, developing people, and raising standards every day.
