Join us at Anglian Water and play a critical role in protecting one of our most precious resources — water. This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of sustainable water resource management, ensuring that abstractions across our region are compliant, responsible, and aligned with our commitment to enhancing the natural environment.

Our region includes some of the UK’s most environmentally sensitive catchments. As Abstraction Licensing Manager, you’ll be central to ensuring abstraction activities are sustainably managed and compliant with regulatory requirements, helping us meet increasing environmental expectations from regulators, stakeholders, and the communities we serve. This is more than a technical role — it’s a chance to make a real impact on the future of water and the natural environment.

About the role

Reporting to the Abstraction Compliance and Assurance Manager, the Abstraction Licensing Manager is responsible for the end-to-end management of abstraction licences across the Anglian Water region. You will lead on compliance monitoring, regulatory reporting, licence applications, and financial oversight, ensuring robust processes are in place and no regulatory commitments are missed.

This is a business critical role requiring strong attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, and the confidence to interpret complex regulations and communicate technical information clearly across the business.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead abstraction licence compliance monitoring, including daily checks and compliance investigations

  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of all abstraction licence and monitoring datasets

  • Produce high-quality regulatory submissions, including abstraction returns and self-reporting

  • Act as technical lead on abstraction licensing matters, advising and supporting internal stakeholders

  • Manage abstraction licence applications, renewals, variations, transfers, and revocations

  • Oversee abstraction licence financials, including annual fees, charges, and derogation payments

  • Support enhanced modelling and analysis for high-risk (“hot”) licence reviews

  • Maintain accurate corporate records of all licence conditions and changes

  • Work collaboratively with external bodies, including the Environment Agency and technical consultants

  • Support EIR requests and contribute to audit and assurance activities

  • Mentor and share knowledge within the team to strengthen capability and resilience

Required skills and experience

  • Educated to HNC level or equivalent NVQ

  • Experience in water resource management or environmental assessment (Desirable)

  • Strong experience working with large datasets, data analysis, and reporting

  • Confidence interpreting regulatory, legal, and licence documentation

  • Experience managing regulatory submissions and compliance processes

  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills

  • Excellent organisational skills with strong attention to detail

  • Confidence and experience in owning large and complex financial processes and budget oversight

  • Experience using telemetry systems (Desirable)

  • Ability to manage your own workload and priorities effectively

As a valued employee, you’ll be entitled to:

  • Personal private health care

  • 26 days annual leave, rising with service, plus Bank Holidays

  • Option to swap Christmas and Easter holidays for those celebrated by your religion

  • Life cover at 8x your salary

  • Personal accident cover up to 5x your salary

  • Flexible working options

  • Competitive pension scheme – Anglian Water double‑matches your contribution up to 6%

  • Bonus scheme

  • A wide range of flexible benefits to support your wellbeing and lifestyle
