Permanent, 37 Hours a week

Location: Hybrid working with a minimum of 2-3 days a week in-person from Peterborough

Be part of the team delivering one of the UK’s most significant water infrastructure projects.

The Major Projects Portfolio Manager is responsible for overseeing a portfolio of high-value, strategically significant projects during the develop phase. These projects include some of the most significant projects within Anglian Water’s capital delivery programme. This role acts as a bridge between senior leadership and project delivery teams, ensuring that the projects are delivered in accordance with our governance arrangements.

We are looking for exceptional candidates with the ability to operate and collaborate at a strategic level whilst exhibiting the attention to detail required to provide robust challenge. The role will also be crucial in enabling decisions to be made around the release of Portfolio Contingency, therefore it is vital that the Portfolio Manager has a full understanding of key performance metrics of the projects within the Portfolio, so that contingency is released in a timely and accurate manner.

What you’ll be doing:

As a key member of the Major Projects team, you’ll take ownership of the overall health and performance of our project portfolio — ensuring delivery against key metrics, budgets, schedules, and benefits. You’ll coordinate portfolio reviews and executive reporting, helping to drive informed decisions and proactive issue resolution.

Working closely with the Governance & Assurance Manager, you’ll make sure all projects align with Anglian Water’s Major Projects Governance framework, including oversight of sponsorship funding and contingency management processes.

You’ll engage with senior leaders, sponsors, and cross-functional teams to communicate portfolio performance, risks, and opportunities clearly and effectively. You’ll also ensure that strategic risks and issues are visible and well-managed at a senior level, supporting confident, transparent decision-making across the business.

What does it take to be a Major Projects Portfolio Manager?

We’re looking for an experienced portfolio professional with a strong background in project, programme, or portfolio delivery management. You’ll bring a proven ability to oversee complex portfolios, ensuring robust governance, effective risk and issue management, and alignment to strategic objectives.

You’ll hold a relevant portfolio management qualification (or equivalent experience) and ideally be educated to degree level in a technical or related discipline. With hands-on experience in contingency management and a track record of resolving issues and mitigating risks, you’ll combine analytical insight with confident stakeholder engagement to drive portfolio success.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of portfolio and project management methodologies (PMI, Prince 2 etc)

  • Proficiency in portfolio management tools (PPM, P6, Risk Management software etc)

  • Strong financial acumen and the ability to provide insight on multi-million pound budgets

  • Exceptional Stakeholder Management and management skills

  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills, with the ability to influence

  • Strong risk management skills

As a valued employee, you’ll be entitled to:

  • Personal private health care

  • 26 days annual leave – rising with length of service

  • Flexible working

  • Competitive pension scheme – Anglian Water double-matches your contributions up to 6%

  • Bonus scheme

  • Flexible benefits to support your wellbeing and lifestyle

Why join us?

This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering large-scale transformation across a complex, forward-thinking organisation. You’ll have the chance to influence key programmes that drive real business impact, collaborating with senior stakeholders and contributing to meaningful change.

You’ll be joining a supportive and innovative environment where your ideas are valued, your expertise is recognised, and your professional growth is encouraged. If you’re passionate about delivering results, leading change, and making a lasting difference, this role offers the scope and challenge to truly make your mark.
