Job Description
Circa £70,000 (depending on skills and experience) + Car Allowance
Full time / Permanent / 37 hours per week, with flexibility for part-time
Location: Flexible — based at one of our sites in Lincoln, Grantham, Huntingdon, Peterborough or Cambridge

As we prepare to embark on our biggest ever capital and operational maintenance programmes in AMP8, Anglian Water is focused on ensuring health and safety remains at the heart of everything we do.
Construction will play a significant role in our business and we are seeking to expand our safety team, to bring in more safety professionals with construction experience to help drive a strong safety culture as our infrastructure programme expands. The IOS Safety Lead is responsible for the management and matrix management of safety professionals who provide the technical safety and environmental support to construction activity carried out by the 3 IOS Framework Partners. The role will ensure that IOS has the appropriate health and safety strategies and plans in place to achieve their business plan and, drive a proactive safety culture in line with Safer Every Day.
The role is responsible for making tangible and realistic recommendations to improve health and safety performance in IOS, in line with the latest legal guidance.
The role reports into Capital Delivery Safety Business Partner but also works as a member of the IOS Management Team, advising Directors and Senior Managers on all aspects of health, safety wellbeing and environment.
This is a unique leadership role with influence across Alliance Directors, senior managers, front-line leaders, and partner contractors — helping shape strategy, ensuring compliance, and advancing Anglian Water’s vision for safety excellence. As such, this position offers a clear pathway into a future more senior leadership positions for an ambitious safety professional looking to fast-track their progression.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide strong client-side support acting as a source of trusted health and Safety advice to the IOS Leadership Team.
Provide insight and make proactive recommendations to reduce accident frequencies and improve safety performance.
Carry out thorough investigations in the event that an accident or a serious near miss occurs, ensuring that lessons learned are shared within the department but also wider within AWS.
Support IOS teams to develop and agree health and safety targets and outcome measures and identify the long-term strategy in line with Safer Every Day.
Implement an assurance process to demonstrate compliance to the statutory Health and Safety requirements relevant to all IOS activity and, provide information for continuous improvement.
Lead on the identification of any improvements required to Health and Safety policies and procedures, working with the Central Safety Team to have these incorporated into the AW Safety Management System.
Bring ideas to challenge the thinking about how the partners within IOS can influence areas with health and safety shortcomings but also, highlight and share areas of best practice.
Provide visible leadership, and targeted individual coaching and development, to your team of Safety Advisors, building their capability, skills and experience, so they can deliver excellent standards of health and safety.
Monitor, analyse, and report on environmental performance metrics, including waste management, emissions, and resource efficiency.
Identify and mitigate environmental risks associated with IOS construction and operational activities.
Role Requirements:
Proven experience in a senior Health & Safety role in a construction environment
Demonstrable experience of having advised Board level stakeholders on health and safety performance.
A Degree or Diploma in Health & Safety is preferred
Proven experience of stakeholder engagement and management skills
Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence Directors and senior managers
Evidence of driving continuous improvement in safety culture and performance
Excellent communication skills — written, verbal, and interpersonal
Proactive, analytical mindset with the ability to challenge constructively
Outstanding planning and organisational capabilities
A full UK Driving Licence
