DSEAR Engineer - Electrical

Location: Anglia Water region wide
Contract: Permanent
Salary: Circa £45,000

Shape a Safer, More Resilient Future with Anglian Water

Are you an experienced electrical professional with a passion for safety in hazardous areas? Do you want to play a vital role in safeguarding people, assets, and the environment by applying your technical expertise where it truly matters? If so, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

We’re looking for a DSEAR Engineer – Electrical to join our expert-led Process Safety team. As a recognised Subject Matter Expert, you’ll be central to our compliance with the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR), ensuring Anglian Water continues to lead the industry in safe, reliable, and sustainable water services.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a DSEAR Engineer, you’ll carry out detailed inspections and risk assessments across a wide variety of electrical and mechanical assets within potentially explosive atmospheres. You’ll take ownership of compliance documentation, support complex remedial work, and serve as a technical authority on DSEAR matters throughout the business.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting detailed electrical inspections in hazardous areas under BS EN 60079-17

  • Reviewing and updating classification reports, zone drawings, and safety documentation

  • Identifying and helping deliver remedial work based on asset risk, cost, and compliance

  • Performing risk assessments aligned with IGEM/SR/25, Zone2NE, and internal codes of practice

  • Auditing appointed persons and external contractors for safety and technical compliance

  • Advising on the selection and installation of ATEX/EX-rated electrical and mechanical equipment

  • Mentoring and coaching DSEAR Technicians, Apprentices, and Competent Persons

  • Deputising for the DSEAR Technical Manager and representing the business where needed

About You

You’re a highly skilled electrician with proven experience in hazardous area compliance, inspections, and safety documentation. You’re driven by the need to do things properly, always striving for improvement while supporting others to do the same. You’re as confident analysing risk as you are engaging with stakeholders, and you have a sharp eye for detail when it comes to both inspections and compliance reporting.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

✅ A recognised electrical qualification (ONC/OND/NVQ3 or equivalent)
✅ CompEX certification (minimum 01–04) – with 05–06, 11, or 14 highly desirable
✅ C&G 2391 Electrical Inspection and Testing
✅ Strong knowledge of BS EN 60079-14 & 17 and DSEAR documentation
✅ Practical experience of inspection, maintenance, and risk mitigation in hazardous areas
✅ Understanding of process safety, flammable gas/liquid risks, and EX protection concepts (e.g. EXd, EXe, EXi)
✅ Experience with thermography, vibration analysis, and intrinsically safe circuits
✅ Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience preparing detailed technical reports
✅ Project leadership experience in inspection and remedial work delivery
✅ Familiarity with CDM Regulations and contractor auditing
