Job Description:

Position Summary:

Performs and provides guidance for the design, development, and implementation of highly complex business and engineering applications. This role acts as a technical authority, setting standards and best practices, and mentoring other developers to ensure the creation of robust, scalable, and high-quality software solutions. The Principal Engineering Applications Developer works closely with the management team and stakeholders to translate complex requirements into technical strategies and is responsible for solving the most challenging and ambiguous technical problems within the organization.

Primary Responsibilities

Design, Prototype and Test - 60%

  • Develops new software and improves existing software based on requirements and requests from customers and colleagues.
  • Participates in solution design, requirements gathering, and backlog refinement processes
  • Assist in the design process of new systems and architectures and inform the development of better programming practices and procedures. Designs, implements and documents new platform technologies including best patterns and engineering practices
  • Designs, develops, implements, documents, and tests changes across multiple applications to ensure deliverables are high quality and meets user expectations
  • Applies extensive technical expertise and strong knowledge of other related engineering disciplines (e.g., cloud architecture, data security) to all responsibilities.
  • Acts as technical expert to analyze, consult, and recommend application software solutions based on the business needs
  • Develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into a final product.
  • Works individually and with cross functional teams to develop solutions from product requirements, business cases, and development plans


Project Management and Documentation - 25%

  • Leads technical aspects of major projects successfully, supporting all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle.
  • Crafts project plans and planning at the program level, setting goals/target specs, and KPIs. Owns the quality of execution, iteration speed, quality of the decision-making, and quality of the results (as appropriate) of projects. Leads projects and is responsible for technical leadership within projects. Consistently and successfully delegates work and divides up complex tasks for project teams.
  • Exercises discretion and independent judgment in the application of specialized knowledge on work that is predominantly intellectual and for which the output produced or the result accomplished cannot be standardized in relation to a given period of time.
  • Determines and pursues courses of action necessary to obtain desired results.

Additional Responsibilities: 5%

  • Identify local improvement initiatives to increase team efficiency through process, methods, and tools improvements.


Required Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering (Aero, Civil, Mechanical), Computer Science, Data Science, or Mathematics.


Preferred Education:

  • Master's of Science (MS) in Engineering (Aero, Civil, Mechanical), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or Master's in Business Administration.


Required Experience:

  • A minimum of 13 years experience in aerospace, government, legal, engineering or manufacturing environment
  • Advanced analytical reporting experience and demonstrable communications and computer skills


Preferred Experience:

  • Experience designing and implementing scalable, cloud-native applications for high-performance computing.
  • Experience working in a multi-functional international environment


Required Licensure/Certifications

  • None


Preferred Licensure/Certifications:

  • PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)
  • Certified ScrumMaster (CSM)


Travel Required:

  • 5% Domestic and International


Citizenship:

  • Authorized to Work in the US

Required Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:

  • Position requires in-depth knowledge of software architecture, data modeling, and application development lifecycles as applied to engineering challenges.
  • Capable of working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment both independently and collectively.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies.
  • Dependable, self-motivated and accessible.
  • Team player demonstrating a positive & collaborative attitude.
  • Able to represent Engineering in presentations at any Airbus related activity.
  • Strong computer background, including MS Excel and Google Suite application experience (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail).
  • Able to lead small teams technically to achieve agreed milestones.
  • Exhibits an exceptional degree of ethics, integrity, creativity and resourcefulness


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:

  • Mechanical and/or Aerospace Engineering experience
  • SAP experience
  • Tableau experience
  • Alteryx experience
  • Portfolio of personal (ideally public) software projects, solutions, and/or writing


Required Communication Skills (Spoken, Written, Influencing, Proficiency in Other Languages):

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written)
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interface with all levels of personnel and disciplines.
  • Effectively communicates issues, solutions, ideas, and status of current work internally and externally


Preferred Communication Skills (Spoken, Written, Influencing, Proficiency in Other Languages)

  • Conversational French and/or German


Level of Decision Making: (Level/Impact of decision making: strategic, tactical, operational)

  • Decision making includes personal development and complex to high impact operational tasks
