Job Description

Reporting to the Technology Governance Manager within Risk & Resilience, the Technology AI Governance Lead is responsible for developing, implementing and continuously enhancing the organisation's AI Governance Framework.

The role provides leadership across all aspects of AI governance, controls, standards, compliance and risk management, ensuring AI capabilities are designed, developed, deployed and operated in line with enterprise policy, risk appetite and regulatory expectations. The Technology AI Governance Lead works alongside the Technology Governance Manager to oversee AI governance initiatives, engaging with key stakeholders across Technology, Data, Risk, Compliance and the wider business.

Responsibilities include designing, implementing and continually improving AI governance processes, including the use of automation and tooling to improve efficiency, transparency and governance maturity. The role is responsible for advancing the maturity of the AI Controls Framework and overseeing the suite of AI policies, standards, guidance and governance artefacts.

Working closely with Line 2 Data & Responsible AI Risk, the role provides governance leadership, subject matter expertise and strategic advice to ensure alignment between first-line delivery and second-line oversight, challenge and assurance. The Technology AI Governance Lead acts as the primary authority and advisor on AI governance matters and supports the safe, responsible and compliant adoption of Artificial Intelligence across the organisation.

Main Duties

  • Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the organisation’s AI Governance Framework and associated governance processes.
  • Develop and maintain AI standards, controls, guidance, playbooks and governance artefacts.
  • Drive the maturity of the AI Controls Framework, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, risk appetite and business objectives.
  • Embed Responsible AI principles and governance-by-design throughout the AI lifecycle.
  • Provide governance oversight and support for AI and GenAI Route-to-Live activities.
  • Act as the subject matter expert and trusted advisor for AI governance, Responsible AI and emerging AI regulation.
  • Translate regulatory, policy and risk requirements into practical governance controls and business guidance.
  • Oversee AI governance compliance activities, assurance reviews and remediation actions.
  • Manage AI governance risks, issues, standards exceptions and associated risk acceptance processes.
  • Prepare governance reporting, management information, metrics and committee papers for senior stakeholders and governance forums.
  • Build effective relationships across Technology, Data, Risk, Compliance and business teams to drive consistent governance outcomes.
  • Monitor emerging AI technologies, regulations and industry standards, recommending enhancements to governance frameworks and controls.
  • Support the development of training, awareness and capability-building initiatives to promote responsible and compliant adoption of AI.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues on AI governance requirements, policies, standards and governance processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement through automation, tooling and governance maturity initiatives.

Key Skills, Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Subject matter expertise in Responsible AI governance and broader governance, risk and compliance frameworks, with significant experience in Technology Governance, Risk and Compliance roles.
  • Strong practical understanding of Artificial Intelligence technologies including Generative AI, Agentic AI, Machine Learning and emerging AI capabilities.
  • Experience developing, implementing and improving governance frameworks, policies, standards and controls.
  • Experience designing and embedding governance processes and operating models.
  • Proven ability to translate regulatory, policy and risk requirements into practical business controls and governance outcomes.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills, including engagement with senior leadership and governance forums.
  • Experience preparing governance reporting, management information and committee papers.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to balance governance rigour with pragmatic delivery outcomes.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical and regulatory topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Self-motivated, proactive and able to operate independently in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable

  • Experience working within a regulated environment, ideally financial services.
  • Knowledge of emerging AI regulatory frameworks and industry standards.
  • Experience supporting governance, risk or compliance activities relating to AI or advanced analytics.
  • Experience developing governance metrics, controls frameworks or assurance activities.
  • Practical experience using Microsoft Copilot, GenAI tools, AI agents or other enterprise AI technologies.
  • Experience delivering training, mentoring or capability development initiatives.

Working arrangements

  • This is a remote role, with an expectation to attend the Ty Admiral Cardiff office once a month.
