At Mott MacDonald, we are proud to support those who have served and those who continue to serve. Veterans, reservists, cadet force adult volunteers, service leavers, and military spouses bring a wealth of skills, experience, and values that align powerfully with our purpose and culture. Through dedicated pathways, internal support, and a commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant at the highest levels of the business, we have a workplace where military-connected individuals thrive.
Our commitment
As a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and a Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold award holder, Mott MacDonald is dedicated to ensuring that no member of the Armed Forces community faces disadvantage in the workplace. Our commitment goes beyond compliance—it’s about creating tangible opportunities, fostering inclusive environments, and celebrating the strengths people from the Armed Forces community bring.
Celebrating Armed Forces Day with the SSAFA Big Brew Up
We’re proud to recognise and celebrate Armed Forces Day each year, and one of our key events is the SSAFA Big Brew Up. Organised by our internal network, the Big Brew Up is a meaningful opportunity for colleagues to come together in solidarity and appreciation.
Through the Big Brew Up, we:
- Raise funds and awareness for SSAFA – Mott MacDonald’s chosen Armed Forces charity
- Celebrate the stories and experiences of veterans, reservists and service families within our workforce.
- Build connection across offices and regions through a shared commitment to support and recognition.
...and enjoy tea and cake and a good chat!

The Armed Forces pathway
One of the key ways we deliver on this commitment is through our Armed Forces Pathway. This bespoke initiative provides ring-fenced roles designed to support individuals transitioning from military to civilian careers. These roles are created to recognise and value the transferable skills gained in service – such as leadership, adaptability, and complex problem solving.
We ensure:
- Targeted opportunities across a range of roles and disciplines.
- Supportive onboarding and mentoring tailored for those from military backgrounds.
- Development pathways and professional development opportunities.
- Flexibility and understanding for individuals balancing other responsibilities and commitments.
Supporting with inclusive policies
In addition to meaningful careers, we offer a benefits package that supports the wellbeing of our employees and families from the Armed Forces Community:
- Flexible working arrangements, including part-time roles and hybrid options
- A commitment to support office moves (even overseas) and sabbaticals to fit around postings and drafts for military families
- Enhanced leave policies, including two weeks paid leave for reservists and cadet force adult volunteers for annual training commitments.
- Mental health and wellbeing support, with access to employee assistance programmes.
- Professional development opportunities, including pathways to chartership and leadership programmes.
- Inclusive networks, including our Armed Forces Network which provides peer support, networking, and advocacy across the business.
Collaboration with Armed Forces organisations
We work closely with organisations like
- Career Transition Partnerships (CTP) – to support service leavers as they explore new opportunities
- BuildForce – which connects veterans to roes in construction and infrastructure
- Forces Employment – working in partnership to support veterans and forces families
- Officers’ Association Scotland and RFEA – to ensure broad access to careers advice and job openings.
Supporting cadets: building future talent
Mott MacDonald actively supports cadet organisations by:
- Recognising and supporting employees who serve as cadet instructors.
- Providing early careers insight for cadets interested in STEM and infrastructure careers
- Offering work experience and career talks to help cadets understand their potential beyond service.
