Balancing work and family life can be a challenge, especially for parents and carers, who need to balance being present at home, whilst pursuing fulfilling careers.
At Virgin Media O2, there’s a real understanding of the unique needs of working parents, with a commitment to creating a supportive environment where they can thrive both professionally and personally. From flexible working arrangements to inclusive policies, Virgin Media O2 is redefining what it means to support them in the workplace.
To give us a closer look at how Virgin Media O2 creates this balance, we sat down with Stephen Pink, Digital Talent Acquisition Team Lead, to explore his insight and experience as a working dad and understand how Virgin Media O2 champions parental inclusion.Hi Stephen, can you tell us more about your role at Virgin Media O2 and what led you to join the company?
When my wife became pregnant, after years of commuting from Farnham to London, I decided to find a role closer to home to support her. Virgin Media O2 stood out for its great culture and development opportunities, with the added bonus of their office being just 20 minutes away. I applied for the Recruitment Business Partner role, was interviewed, and was lucky enough to join. Eight years later, I now lead a team of 6 across Data/Tech and giffgaff, overseeing recruitment and driving key initiatives in Talent Acquisition.
As a working dad, what challenges have you faced in balancing your career and family life?
Every day, I juggle school drop-offs, afterschool clubs, and balancing work whether I’m at home or in the office. My wife works part-time, so we have to plan carefully, making sure we both get the opportunity to progress without the pressure of being working parents.
How does Virgin Media O2 create a supportive environment for working fathers?
Our different teams all work together to balance commitments and time online. In my team, as long as I’m working my hours and visible between 10am and 4pm, I can adjust the start or end of my day. This allows me to take my kids to school without guilt if I arrive a few minutes late. Additionally, the Men’s Health and Wellbeing Network provides a supportive space for dads to share experiences and advice.
Can you share specific policies or initiatives Virgin Media O2 has in place for parents?
Virgin Media O2 offer industry-leading support to eligible employees (which means you have to worked for us for a certain amount of time), including up to 26 weeks of paid maternity and adoption leave, 14 weeks of paid paternity leave, and up to 12 weeks of paid neonatal leave.
We’re fully equitable, so these policies apply to all, including same-sex couples. We also support adoption leave and carers leave so that people can care for loved ones. If you have specific circumstances, we encourage you to chat to us about your needs so that we can fully outline the support you’ll receive.
What role does leadership play in creating a family-friendly culture at Virgin Media O2?
Leadership at Virgin Media O2 sets the tone by encouraging flexibility and understanding, especially for parents. My boss, who also has kids, is supportive of my family commitments, and this approach filters through the whole company culture.
Are there any standout moments where you felt Virgin Media O2 truly went above and beyond to support you as a parent?
When we had our first child, complications meant we had to stay in hospital for over a week. My manager gave me extra time off, which I really appreciated as it allowed me to acclimatise with my newborn at home. At the time, there was no policy in place for this, but now we offer Neonatal leave, as we recognise how crucial this is for our team.
When we were considering having our second child, we had one frozen egg left after IVF (ICSI) treatment. My manager was very supportive, allowing me to attend appointments with my wife to help ease the stress.
Sadly, my kids have had speech issues and required therapy, often during school hours or after school. My manager is always so understanding, and allowed me to attend these sessions during work hours, which I’ve always been grateful for.
How does Virgin Media O2 encourage open conversations about parental needs and challenges in the workplace?
With our network groups and supportive culture Virgin Media O2 is a place where you’re encouraged to be your authentic self. Open conversations are supported, and as a manager, I encourage my team to talk about their challenges.
What advice would you give to other working dads looking to maintain a healthy work-life balance?
Stay active, whether it’s before the school run or during lunch. It helps your physical and mental health. Communicate clearly with your partner about plans and priorities, and make time for both work and relaxation. And don’t miss out on important moments like your kids’ first sports day, you don’t get that time back.
How do you think organisations like Virgin Media O2 can inspire other companies to better support working parents?
By showcasing the success of our policies through employee stories across social platforms, other companies can see the benefits. Our Career Returners programme a great example, supporting people who’ve been out of work, including parents, to return to their careers with the skills and confidence they need.
