About this Role

We are seeking an experienced Technical Product Owner to join a cloud-native insurance platform engineering team supporting digital and embedded insurance solutions. This role is suited to an individual with strong expertise in long-term life and funeral insurance systems, product ownership, and modern software delivery practices. The successful candidate will act as the bridge between business objectives and engineering execution, translating complex insurance requirements into actionable user stories and technical specifications. Working within an agile environment, they will collaborate with architects, engineers, compliance stakeholders, and business teams to deliver secure, scalable, and resilient AWS-based platforms aligned to South African regulatory requirements and customer-centric outcomes.

What you’ll do

  • Own, manage, prioritise, and continuously refine the product backlog based on business value, technical feasibility, and architectural considerations.
  • Define user journeys and system requirements for life and funeral insurance products, including premium collection, waiting periods, beneficiary management, and claims processing.
  • Ensure product features, data handling practices, and customer journeys comply with South African regulatory frameworks, including Twin Peaks requirements, while embedding Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) principles.
  • Translate business requirements into detailed user stories, acceptance criteria, workflows, API specifications, and delivery-ready artefacts.
  • Design and optimise automated claims and policy administration processes, including beneficiary verification, reinsurance coordination, and suspicious claims handling.
  • Collaborate closely with architects and engineering teams to align product features with AWS cloud-native microservices architecture and DevSecOps practices.
  • Participate in Agile and SAFe ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Build strong partnerships with business, compliance, and technical stakeholders to drive transparent planning, prioritisation, and delivery.
  • Use AI-assisted tools to support requirements gathering, documentation, acceptance criteria creation, and process optimisation while applying appropriate validation and governance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance product quality, delivery effectiveness, and customer experience.

Who you are

  • Experienced Product Owner, Product Manager, or Technical Business Analyst with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience and 3-5 years in product ownership within software engineering environments.
  • Strong subject matter expertise across life and funeral insurance products, policy administration, premium collection, waiting periods, beneficiary verification, and claims payout processes.
  • Demonstrated experience building or integrating insurance systems that align with South African regulatory frameworks, including FSCA, PA, TCF, POPIA, PPRs, and related requirements.
  • Knowledgeable in API-first design, cloud platforms such as AWS, distributed systems, integrations, data models, and microservices architecture.
  • Comfortable engaging in technical discussions with architects and engineers while maintaining strong business stakeholder alignment.
  • Familiar with software development lifecycle practices, CI/CD methodologies, secure-by-design principles, and cloud-native delivery models.
  • Skilled in backlog management, roadmap planning, user story creation, stakeholder engagement, and Agile delivery.
  • Experienced with tools such as Jira, Confluence, Miro, and Figma.
  • Strong communicator with excellent analytical thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, adaptability, accountability, and decision-making skills.
  • Committed to continuous learning and able to apply a human-in-the-loop mindset when leveraging AI throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Degree qualified in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related discipline, or able to demonstrate equivalent practical experience.
  • Agile certifications such as CSPO, SAFe PM/PO, or equivalent are advantageous.
  • Exposure to actuarial modelling, underwriting, IFRS 17, reinsurance principles, or financial services environments would be beneficial.
  • Previous experience in software engineering or systems analysis prior to moving into product ownership is advantageous.
