Role purpose:
To build and scale M-Pesa into Tanzania’s leading digital financial services platform by driving ecosystem growth, financial inclusion, and sustainable revenue through innovative fintech solutions.
Key accountabilities and decision ownership:
FinTech Strategy & Growth
Define and execute the Financial Services strategy, owning full P&L, to deliver scalable growth, profitability, and market leadership across payments, credit, savings, insurance, and digital financial solutions.
Ecosystem & Partnerships Leadership
Build and scale strategic partnerships with banks, fintechs, merchants, and government to position M-Pesa as the preferred digital payments and financial services platform.
Product Innovation & Customer Value
Lead development and adoption of innovative, customer-centric financial products leveraging data, technology, and digital channels to improve experience and increase usage.
Commercial & Distribution Excellence
Drive revenue growth through optimized pricing, merchant and agent network expansion, and omnichannel distribution, ensuring strong market penetration across all customer segments.
Risk, Compliance & Operational Excellence
Ensure regulatory compliance (AML, KYC, data privacy), strengthen fraud prevention and system resilience, and maintain high levels of customer trust and operational efficiency.
Leadership & Talent Development
Builds a high-performing M-Pesa organization by empowering leaders, shaping a scalable talent structure, and developing critical fintech capabilities. The role drives attraction, development, and retention of top talent while embedding a strong performance culture, structured learning, and knowledge sharing to enhance engagement, productivity, and innovation.
Core competencies, knowledge and experience:
• Strong leadership and proven experience in fintech, digital financial services, or payments ecosystems
• Commercial acumen with demonstrated P&L ownership and growth delivery
• Strategic thinking with ability to build and scale platform-based business models
• Strong stakeholder management and ability to influence regulators and partners
• Customer-centric mindset with focus on innovation, data-driven decisions, and digital excellence
Must have technical / professional qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, technology, or related field
• Minimum 15 years’ experience in financial services, fintech, telecoms, or banking
• Significant executive leadership experience managing large-scale, regulated businesses
• Proven experience in digital financial services (payments, lending, or ecosystem platforms)
Key performance indicators:
• Financial Services revenue growth and profitability
• Active customers (consumer and merchant) and transaction volume/value growth
• Customer satisfaction (NPS) and trust index
