Role Purpose/Business Unit:

The Executive Head: Technology FBP has accountability and responsibility for delivering the financial support requirements of the Vodacom Technology Business unit under their supervision, namely: Engineering (ANE, Tx, Core), VSA IT, ASOC, Cyber, and VFS tech. The core purpose will be to manage a team of finance professionals directly and indirectly to orchestrate and deliver the following financial outputs:

  • Delivering accurate and timely financial reporting and analysis on the performance of the supervised technology divisions (CAPEX & OPEX)
  • Ensuring that key objectives (strategic and operational) of the Vodacom SA CTO and Finance Managing Executive are understood and met by the various technology functions and followed through with regards to financial planning, analysis and commercial business execution
  • Integrates information from technology functions to deliver consolidated long-range plans, budgets, forecast submissions and process execution under the supervision of the VSA CTO and aligned with Vodacom Group CTO
  • Gathers information from all technology, finance and business functions to deliver insightful management information, supporting monthly/periodic performance reviews, commentary and analysis
  • Orchestrates the preparation and delivers reporting for tracking of strategic objectives and commercial initiatives business cases and post investment reviews

Your responsibilities will include:

1. Financial Planning

  • Support the technology functions in compiling the DB and monthly forecasts
  • Support the technology functions to ensure strategic and operational objectives and initiatives are fairly reflected in the financial plans and CTO strategy
  • Work closely with technology functions and central financial planning (FP&A) to ensure that business follows the proper planning processes, deliverables are achieved, and proper accounting treatment is applied
  • Support central FP&A to ensure overall plan for the business is consistent at company level
  • Support the technology functions in identifying best way to allocate resources to maximise value generation and cost efficiency
  • Preparation and coordination with BUs for Capital Allocation Review (CAR), CIRB, CAPEX round Robins and Quarterly Budget Review (QBR)
  • Preparation of BCA evaluation on CAPEX prior to CIRB in March prior to fiscal commencement


2. Target Management and control

  • Ensure synchronisation of technology functional plans with the Long-Range plan (LRP) and Annual Budget/Forecasts
  • Deliver consolidated technology LRP and the Annual Budget/Forecast after identifying risks and opportunities and explain underlying assumptions and business models – supporting the delivery of the budget targets
  • Align the Decision support and Business case results to targets and forecast plans, by rejecting commercial plans that contradict strategic priorities and holding business accountable
  • Review/monitor and report on senior management performance targets to deliver business success:
    • OPEX, CAPEX and cash flow targets
    • Target Return on Investment (achieved on capex investment decisions and overall ROCI)
    • Identifying potential issues and carrying out analysis to validate/mitigate
  • Supporting departments to identify, analyse, validate and implement remedy actions risk mitigation
  • Input to central FP&A on technology planning

3. Management Reporting

  • Accountable for delivering consolidated financial information to the relevant stakeholders (VSA CFO, Technology Finance ME and VSA CTO)
  • Maintain and enhance financial reporting framework for consolidated financial information
  • Provide/integrate insightful management information from technology functions
  • Performance tracking of strategic Technology objectives and initiatives
  • Monthly financial commentary, analysis on performance and success of risk mitigation where relevant
  • Monitoring business unit performance against targets
  • Identifying potential issues and carrying out analysis to validate and report back
  • Supporting departments to identify, analyse, validate and implement remedy actions based on trends and variances
  • Management reporting for EXCO and board submissions
  • Monthly evaluation of ongoing project/ execution performance (CAPEX and OPEX)


4. Business Intelligence

  • Facilitate / Provide insightful management information with strong focus on anticipating and managing monthly/quarterly results, and on management actions
  • Preparation of dashboards and automated reports to improve processing and reporting efficiencies


5. Operational Support and control

  • Analysis of operational expenditure and savings protection
  • Support technology domain heads on budget management where required. (Specifically on strategic technology projects and other focus areas)


6. Key Stakeholder Support

  • In addition to primarily supporting the main stakeholders (Tech Finance ME, VSA CTO, VSA CFO) provide support to a wide range of internal customers

Typical Outputs

Executive and board reporting

  • Prepare financial analysis and commentary
    • CAPEX and OPEX analysis and commentary
    • Trend and variance analysis
    • Actionable insight and recommendations
    • Insightful management information with a strong focus on divisions’ key targets and expected future results


Monthly operational reporting

  • Work alongside the Technology Strategy and other Functions to maintain and enhance monthly operational reporting to the executive management team, providing insightful information incorporating:
    • Performance tracking of business unit objectives and initiatives
    • Key financial performance for each of the technology functions
    • Key operational KPI / metrics

Financial planning

  • Support Finance and Technology teams in the financial planning processes to deliver challenging and achievable financial plans:
    • Preparation of the Long-Range Plan (LRP)
    • Preparation of the annual detailed budget
    • Preparation of the financial plan reviews (three review cycles per annum)
    • Preparation of CAR inputs, BCAs and PIRs
    • Measure performance against LRP, annual budget and forecasts
    • Manage interface with central FP&A

Operating expense control

  • Support technology domain leads in maintaining an effective operational control environment over operating and capital expenditure, identifying weaknesses and developing solutions
    • Set up standard benchmarking and cost tracking across all functions – leverage information to compare performance and identify areas to focus on efficiencies
    • Analysis and reporting of operating and capital expenses per category across all technology functions
    • Recommendations to management teams on where focus is required
    • Manage interface with central FP&A and Group Tech FP&A
    • Establish governance framework and ensure this is adhered to - specifically with respect to strategic projects where contractual, statutory or technical finance obligations need to be met

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

  • MBA with finance specialisation and experience
  • CA(SA) or finance equivalent at honours or master’s level
  • Mobile Technology experience (advantageous)
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a finance role with reporting and FP&A experience (Essential)
  • Thorough understanding of Telecommunications/ technology company operating model and financial management requirements (Essential)
  • Proven team leadership / management experience with a track record of building high performance teams

Technical / Professional Expertise

  • Strong Technology Management Finance experience
  • Proven track record of managing key relationships with multiple stakeholders to ensure all deliverables and issues are proactively raised and addressed
  • Exposure to working with Senior Management teams and a proven ability to influence and build relationships at a senior level across different territories
  • Good understanding of multiple financial disciplines, including overall reporting, accounting and budgeting processes
  • Able to play a leading role in reporting financial results to interested parties
  • Has the experience to identify key improvements to the reporting process
