Job Description

Veterinary Surgeon – clinical freedom in forward thinking practice.

Practice your best medicine.

If you're looking for a practice where clinical freedom, teamwork and genuinely high standards of patient care come first, we'd love to hear from you.

At Vets for Pets Emersons Green, we're proud to be an independent-minded, locally owned practice where our priority is simple: do what's right for every pet and every client. No clinical targets, no unnecessary pressure—just the support to be the vet you trained to be.

About us

Owned by Carla and Ollie, Emersons Green Vets for Pets has become a well-established part of the local community. Many of our team have been with us for over 8 years, creating a supportive, friendly environment with an exceptionally loyal client base.

Our clients trust us, and with a high proportion of insured pets, we're able to investigate and manage cases thoroughly while maintaining an affordable, approachable service.

Our team

You'll be joining a fantastic team of 24 colleagues, including:

  • 7 Veterinary Surgeons
  • 9 Registered Veterinary Nurses
  • Practice Manager
  • Reception Manager
  • 5 Client Care Advisors
  • Cleaner

Our experienced vet team includes a certificate holder in Small Animal Surgery, a vet with a particular interest in ophthalmology both with over 12 years' experience, and Carla and Sophie, who have over 25 years' experience and both enjoy internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, ultrasound, laparoscopy and endoscopy.

We work many medical and surgical cases in-house, supported by visiting orthopaedic surgeons and a monthly HeartVets cardiology clinic, giving you the opportunity to develop your own interests while working alongside experienced colleagues.

How we work

Our culture is built on trust, support and continuous learning.

We encourage discussion, share ideas openly and hold regular vet meetings, case discussions and morbidity and mortality (M&M) meetings within a genuine no-blame culture. We believe learning comes from collaboration, not criticism.

You'll enjoy true clinical freedom and autonomy, with plenty of support whenever you need it.

Our rota offers a varied mix of consulting, operating and inpatient care, although we're equally happy to accommodate a vet who prefers a consult-only role.

What your day looks like

  • Standard 20-minute consultation
  • Longer appointments if needed for complex medical cases, geriatric patients, dermatology and euthanasia
  • Dedicated admin time for phone calls, laboratory results and clinical notes
  • Well-organised diary with realistic appointment scheduling
  • Most vets work 10-hour days with a paid one-hour lunch break.

Typical shifts include:

  • 8:30am–4:30pm
  • 8:30am–6:30pm
  • 9:00am–7:00pm

Weekend commitment is just 1 in 6 Saturdays (9am–5pm) with no out-of-hours.

We're looking for someone to work 3–4 days per week, plus the Saturday 1 in 6 rota.

Our practice

Our spacious, purpose-built practice was extended and updated in 2023 and is equipped with everything you'd expect from a progressive first-opinion hospital, including:

  • Three consulting rooms
  • Digital radiography
  • Dental radiography
  • High-quality ultrasound including cardiac probe and ecg
  • Laparoscopic equipment
  • Gastroscope and bronchoscope
  • Two operating theatres
  • Separate dog and cat wards
  • Comfortable staff room and separate office space

What we offer

  • Salary up to £60,000 FTE (DOE)
  • Salary negotiable for candidates with advanced skills or certificates
  • 5.6 weeks annual leave, increasing to 6.6 weeks after two years
  • Contributory pension scheme
  • Life assurance (4× annual salary)
  • Income protection
  • Generous CPD allowance and support for further development
  • Paid RCVS, BVA and VDS memberships
  • Employee discounts and benefits
  • Free on-site parking
  • No out-of-hours

Who we're looking for

We're looking for a compassionate veterinary surgeon who enjoys first-opinion practice and values building lasting relationships with clients.

Whether you enjoy consulting, medicine, surgery or have developed a particular clinical interest, we'll support you in shaping the role around your strengths.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who enjoys being part of a friendly, collaborative team where everyone is encouraged to learn, develop and genuinely enjoy coming to work.

Interested?

If this sounds like the kind of practice you've been looking for, we'd love to hear from you.
