Job Description

Are you an experienced Registered Veterinary Nurse looking to progress into a leadership role? We're looking for a passionate and motivated Head Registered Veterinary Nurse to join our friendly team in Braintree.

This is an exciting opportunity for an RVN who is ready to develop their career, combining hands-on nursing with the chance to lead, inspire, and support a talented nursing team. As Head RVN, you'll play a key role in shaping the future of the practice, championing high clinical standards while helping others reach their full potential.

About the Role

As our Head RVN, you'll lead by example, creating a positive and supportive environment where every team member can thrive. You'll enjoy a varied role that balances clinical work with leadership and administrative responsibilities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and inspiring the nursing team, fostering a culture of collaboration, learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Supporting, mentoring, and encouraging colleagues to develop their skills and confidence.
  • Acting as a positive role model, demonstrating excellent clinical standards and professionalism.
  • Delivering high-quality patient care and maintaining exceptional nursing standards.
  • Working closely with the wider practice team to ensure excellent patient and client care.
  • Assisting with day-to-day administrative duties, including rota planning, stock management, clinical governance, and supporting the smooth running of the nursing team.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve processes and proactively contributing to practice development.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with a shared weekend rota of just 1 in 4 weekends. A day of TOIL will be given following a weekend worked. Shift patterns are 8:30am-4:30pm or 11:15am-7:15pm, all including a 30-minute lunch break.

About You

We are looking for a forward-thinking, enthusiastic and experienced RVN who:

  • Has strong general nursing experience in small animal practice with at least 3 years of experience
  • Is confident in leadership and team support
  • Has excellent client care and communication skills
  • Enjoys developing others and leading by example
  • Is organised, proactive, and comfortable driving positive change
  • Has experience of clinical coaching (a course or refresher training can be provided if needed).

About Us:

We’re a supportive and friendly team with varying experience and interests made up of 5 Vets, 4 RVNs, 2 SVNs, 4 Receptionists, and a Practice Manager. We are based inside a popular Pets at Home store in Freeport Shopping Village, just a 5-minute walk from the train station, 20 minutes from Stansted Airport, and 45 minutes from the coast.

We can offer you:

  • Salary up to £35,000 (depending on experience)
  • Generous CPD allowance with allocated time off to complete
  • Emphasis on wellbeing
  • Contributory pension scheme
  • Paid memberships (RCVS, BVNA, VDS)
  • Exclusive company and high street discounts and rewards
  • Shared allocation of Bank Holidays (1-2 per year)

Why Join Us?

This role offers the opportunity to progress your career into a rewarding leadership position while remaining actively involved in clinical nursing. You'll have the chance to make a real impact by developing your team, enhancing patient care, and helping shape the future of the practice.

If you're ready to take the next step in your career and become a leader who inspires others to succeed, we'd love to hear from you.
