Job Description

The Role

Location: Cumbria (Various Locations) Salary: Competitive | Hybrid | Full time

If you’re an experienced engineer who thrives on solving complex problems, coordinating technical interfaces and ensuring new assets are delivered safely, seamlessly and ready for operation, this role has your name on it.

United Utilities is delivering one of the UK’s most ambitious capital programmes — and we’re looking for a Senior Integration Engineer to play a pivotal role in bringing major projects to life.

This is where engineering meets strategy, where your technical judgement shapes operational readiness, and where your leadership ensures that every new asset integrates flawlessly into our live network.

Why This Role Stands Out

As a Senior Integration Engineer, you’ll be the technical conductor ensuring every discipline, contractor and stakeholder is aligned. You’ll guide projects through the critical integration and takeover phases — the point where engineering design becomes operational reality.

You’ll influence:

  • Commissioning and integration strategy
  • Asset readiness and operational takeover
  • Engineering risk management
  • Contractor performance
  • Technical assurance and compliance
  • Training and knowledge transfer to operational teams

This is a role with visibility, responsibility and real engineering impact.

What You’ll Lead & Deliver

Integration & Takeover Leadership

  • Oversee the Agreement to Operate (ATO) and Agreement to Takeover (ATT) processes, ensuring new assets meet safety, operational and engineering standards.
  • Authorise integration activities and ensure all takeover requirements are met.
  • Become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person (SQEP) for integration.

Technical Assurance & Engineering Governance

  • Provide expert engineering advice across project teams, contractors and operational colleagues.
  • Ensure all integration activities comply with UU permits, H&S requirements and best practice.
  • Identify engineering risks early and implement robust mitigation strategies.

Project Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with Technical Officers, project managers, commissioning teams and operational leaders.
  • Chair ATO meetings, maintain trackers and ensure actions are delivered.
  • Manage external contractors to ensure technical quality and readiness.

Operational Readiness & Training

  • Develop training materials and deliver technical training to operational teams.
  • Analyse training effectiveness and ensure knowledge transfer is embedded.
  • Support the smooth transition from construction to operation.

What You’ll Bring

We’re looking for a technically strong, solutions‑driven engineer with the confidence to lead integration across complex projects.

You’ll need:

  • A degree/HND in engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Strong experience providing technical advice and influencing engineering outcomes.
  • Detailed knowledge of integration and takeover processes.
  • Experience working across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • The ability to manage risks, coordinate stakeholders and drive technical compliance.
  • A full UK driving licence.

This role is ideal for engineers from backgrounds such as:

Mechanical, Electrical, ICA, Process, Commissioning, Systems Engineering, Asset Integration, Water/Wastewater Engineering, or similar.

Why Join United Utilities?

You’ll be part of a FTSE 100 organisation with a clear mission and a commitment to engineering excellence. Expect:

  • 26–30 days annual leave + bank holidays
  • 10.5% Annual Bonus
  • Up to 14% employer pension contribution
  • Bonus scheme
  • Healthcare plan
  • Flexible hybrid working
  • Professional development including:
  • Support to gain CEng/IEng
  • SaRS membership and chartership pathway
  • Leadership coaching
  • Project management qualifications
  • Mentoring and technical development

This is a place where engineers grow, lead and shape the future.
