The Role
At United Utilities, every environmental incident matters. As an Environmental Events Manager, you’ll be at the heart of our operational response, acting as the vital link between our frontline teams and the Environment Agency to ensure incidents are managed quickly, effectively and compliantly.
This is a fast-paced, decision-making role where no two shifts are the same. From coordinating responses to pollution incidents and gathering critical evidence, to working with operational teams and external stakeholders, you’ll play a key role in protecting our environment while helping us meet our regulatory commitments.

This involves working across various teams and departments to identify potential pollutions and own the effective response, mitigation, resolution and reporting of pollution incidents
- Ensure all potential incidents are fully investigated, that all mitigation measures are implemented and that incidents are reported and appropriate evidence gathered in a timely manner to minimise the impact of all pollution events.
- Manage all internal and external escalation relating to potential or confirmed pollution events and act as a single point of contact to the Environment Agency for all updates relating to live incidents, taking ownership of that key external relationship.
- Support the incident management process with data and analytical insight.
- Undertake proactive pollution prevention activities, including proactive planning (e.g ahead of adverse weather) and proactive / predictive monitoring and control activity, working with the Environment and Wastewater teams
- Drive continuous improvement across pollution case management and proactive pollution prevention, identifying improvements in people, processes, systems or data and delivering the improvements where appropriate.
- Lead the delivery of packages of work for the Pollution Improvement Plan and act as the ICC rep for others
- Provide coaching, upskilling and support to teams involved in the end-to-end process for both pollution investigation and proactive pollution prevention.
Essential Skils & Experience
- Educated to HNC level (or equivalent) or able to demonstrate significant experience within the Water and Wastewater industry, with a strong understanding of wastewater operations and associated regulatory requirements.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across operational teams, senior leaders, regulators, and external partners.
- Strong planning, organisational and prioritisation skills, capable of managing competing demands while delivering strategic and operational objectives.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data, identify trends and anomalies, assess risks, and provide evidence-based recommendations.
- Experience of developing, implementing and embedding new processes, procedures and governance frameworks to support operational performance, compliance and business improvement.
- Ability to work proactively and reactively in a fast-paced operational environment, responding effectively to changing priorities, incidents and business needs.
- Strong understanding of corporate systems and business processes, with the adaptability to embrace system changes and drive continuous improvement across multiple teams.
