Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced API Technical Product Owner to join Tesco Mobile. As a Technical Product Owner for our API Gateway and orchestration platform, you own one of Tesco Mobiles most critical technology platforms - the backbone of our customer journeys and digital experiences. This platform sits at the heart of how channels, domains, and thirdparty systems interact, enabling resilient, scalable and secure endtoend journeys across the business.

Tesco Mobile depends on its Product Owners to be the voice of our customers and colleagues. Our Technical Product Owners work across squads that are responsible for delivering strategic platforms and customer journeys that underpin our digital experiences.

Youll be joining a cross-functional team that blends technical expertise with customer-centric thinking. Whether the focus is on enabling platform capabilities, improving engineering practices, or enhancing end-to-end journeys, the team is united by a shared purpose: to deliver meaningful value through technology.

We work in agile, empowered squads where collaboration, experimentation, and continuous improvement are part of our DNA. Youll be supported by engineers, designers, Business Analysts, and stakeholders who are passionate about building great products and youll play a key role in shaping the direction and impact of the work.

You are accountable for maximising the value of the API orchestration layer, balancing customer experience, platform reliability, developer enablement, and longterm architectural evolution. You will define and execute a clear product strategy as we replatform our API Gateway capability, working closely with architects, engineers and stakeholders to evolve the platform beyond a single vendor solution and towards a futurefit, technologyagnostic architecture.

  • You will understand your Product area and make decisions about its development to ensure we meet Product and Tribe OKRs.
  • Keep abreast of key developments and understand our critical systems and platforms.
  • Understand the impact my platform has on our customers' experience; their needs and problems influence my Product roadmap.
  • Facilitate workshops with technical and business stakeholders to gain a shared understanding of needs and goals. Considering dependencies, risks and value at stake in prioritisation decisions.
  • Set and track KPIs for the Product and have a continuous improvement plan to drive better value for money, scalability, robustness and alignment to product KPIs
  • Understand the Scrum methodology
  • Set and iterate our Product vision in collaboration with others in your squad and tribe.
  • Create and maintain a clear roadmap for your product that is aligned to user and customer outcomes.
  • Ensure core platforms meet cyber security standards, working closely with the Cyber Security team to prioritise and address vulnerabilities/threats
  • Proven experience owning or working closely with API platforms, API Gateways or integration layers in complex, distributed environments.
  • Strong understanding of API design, lifecycle management, versioning, security and performance considerations.
  • Experience with eventdriven architectures, asynchronous integrations, and systemtosystem orchestration.
  • Highly analytical with the ability to use telemetry, logs and metrics to understand system behaviour and customer impact.
  • Comfortable working in technologyheavy product spaces, translating complex engineering concepts into clear product direction
  • Experience with API Gateway technologies, such as: Apigee, AWS API Gateway, Kong, MuleSoft Azure API Management or equivalent API management platforms
  • Strong experience with observability and log analysis tools, such as Splunk, Datadog, OpenTelemetry, ELK or similar.
  • Cloudnative experience (AWS and/or Azure), including understanding of networking, security and scalability at platform level.
  • Experience working in largescale replatforming or modernisation programmes.
  • Background in telecoms, retail or similarly highvolume, customercritical environments.

Were looking for someone who:

  • Brings a product mindset to complex technical platforms, with a strong instinct for how platform decisions ultimately affect real customer journeys and experiences.
  • Is highly analytical and evidenceled, comfortable using data, logs, metrics and system insights to understand behaviour, diagnose issues, and inform prioritisation.
  • Excels at working shouldertoshoulder with engineers and architects, shaping solutions through collaboration rather than prescription.
  • Is confident operating across multiple disciplines and senior stakeholders, building trust, alignment and shared understanding around platform direction and tradeoffs.
  • Champions modern engineering and operational practices, working handinhand with teams across DevSecOps, CI/CD, automation, reliability and platform lifecycle management.
  • Is comfortable owning problems that cut across teams and systems, bringing clarity and focus in ambiguous, highimpact platform spaces.
