What you bring

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of SAP consulting experience with at least 8-10 years focused on SAP Transportation Management
  • Led or played key roles in 5+ full lifecycle SAP TM implementations from blueprint through hypercare
  • Experience across multiple industry verticals (manufacturing, retail, consumer goods, logistics service providers, chemicals)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with complementary SAP modules: Extended Warehouse Management (EWM), Global Trade Services (GTS), Event Management (EM), Yard Logistics (YL)
  • Cloud migration expertise including SAP S/4HANA Cloud, SAP TM Cloud Edition, and SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) solutions
  • Pre-sales experience including RFP response, solution demonstrations, proof-of-concept development, and proposal creation
  • Published thought leadership (whitepapers, blogs, case studies) or speaking engagements at industry conferences (SAP Sapphire, CSCMP, Gartner)
  • Experience with transportation visibility platforms, IoT integration, or advanced analytics/AI in supply chain

What you’ll build

The Principal Transportation Management Consultant serves as a senior-level advisor responsible for leading complex SAP Transportation Management (TM) transformation initiatives for enterprise clients. This role combines deep SAP TM expertise with strategic consulting capabilities to design, implement, and optimize end-to-end transportation solutions that drive operational excellence, cost reduction, and supply chain visibility. The position requires thought leadership, client relationship management at executive levels, and the ability to mentor consulting teams while contributing to practice growth and innovation.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Strategic Consulting Leadership: Lead large-scale SAP TM implementations and transformation programs, providing strategic guidance on transportation network optimization, process redesign, and digital supply chain initiatives
  2. Client Engagement & Relationship Management: Serve as trusted advisor to C-level executives and senior stakeholders, managing complex client relationships and ensuring alignment between business objectives and solution delivery
  3. Solution Design & Implementation Oversight: Architect comprehensive SAP TM solutions integrated with SAP S/4HANA, EWM, GTS, and third-party systems; oversee configuration, customization, testing, and deployment activities
  4. Team Leadership & Mentorship: Direct cross-functional project teams (functional, technical, and offshore resources), provide coaching and knowledge transfer, and build organizational capability in transportation management
  5. Business Development & Thought Leadership: Support pre-sales activities, develop proposals and statements of work, contribute to industry publications, and represent the firm at conferences and client forums

SAP Transportation Management (TM) Expertise Required

Core SAP TM Competencies

  • Comprehensive knowledge of SAP TM modules including Forwarding Order Management, Freight Order Management, Transportation Planning, Carrier Selection, Freight Settlement, and Collaboration Portal
  • Deep understanding of SAP TM integration with SAP ERP/S/4HANA logistics (SD, MM, LE) and embedded TM scenarios
  • Expertise in transportation planning strategies: manual planning, Transportation Cockpit, optimizer-based planning (VSR), and automated freight unit building
  • Proficiency in freight order lifecycle management, tendering processes, subcontracting, and execution monitoring
  • Advanced knowledge of charge calculation, freight agreement management, rate tables, and transportation cost allocation

Technical Skills

  • SAP TM configuration and customizing across all functional areas (master data, organizational structures, planning profiles, business rules)
  • Integration architecture design using SAP PI/PO, Cloud Platform Integration (CPI), Web Services (SOAP/REST), and IDoc/RFC technologies
  • Experience with SAP Fiori apps for TM, SAPUI5 development, and SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) extensions
  • Data migration methodologies using LSMW, SAP Data Services, or Migration Cockpit; system landscape design (development, quality, production)
  • Understanding of SAP TM on HANA optimization, performance tuning, and analytics capabilities

Industry Knowledge

  • Expertise in logistics and supply chain operations across multiple transportation modes (road, rail, ocean, air, intermodal)
  • Knowledge of carrier management practices, freight procurement, contract negotiations, and service level agreements
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance requirements (customs, dangerous goods, trade compliance) and integration with SAP GTS
  • Familiarity with industry best practices, benchmarks, and emerging trends (sustainability, real-time visibility, autonomous transportation)

Consulting Competencies

Client Management

  • Proven ability to engage with C-suite executives (CFO, COO, Chief Supply Chain Officer) and influence strategic decision-making
  • Expertise in requirements gathering through workshops, interviews, and process analysis; translating business needs into technical specifications
  • Change management and organizational adoption strategies, including training program design, communication planning, and stakeholder engagement
  • Project governance frameworks, steering committee management, and escalation resolution

Solution Design

  • End-to-end solution architecture spanning SAP TM, ERP/S/4HANA, EWM, GTS, and third-party logistics systems (TMS, WMS, visibility platforms)
  • Business process optimization using Lean Six Sigma or similar methodologies; identification of automation opportunities and efficiency gains
  • Integration strategy development including point-to-point, hub-based, and API-led connectivity approaches
  • Oversight of custom development (ABAP, SAPUI5, BRFplus) ensuring adherence to SAP standards and maintainability

Leadership & Delivery

  • Project and program management using methodologies such as SAP Activate, Agile, or hybrid approaches.
  • Leadership of diverse teams (10-30+ members) including onshore, nearshore, and offshore resources across functional and technical disciplines
  • Quality assurance practices including test strategy development, UAT coordination, cutover planning, and post-go-live support
  • Risk management, issue resolution, and proactive communication to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery
