Job Description

As the RSPB's Environmental Advisor you will play leading role in our journey towards making our charity, including its offices, reserves and projects more sustainable. The RSPB’s Strategy has ten key outcomes to 2030, one of which is RSPB Greening. As such, your role will be a significant one in helping us to achieve our significant ambition in this area.

The role will cover the internal workings of the RSPB, its offices and over 200 nature reserves, including its shops and cafes. We have two home-based roles available; one role will support England and Wales, and the other will support Scotland and Northern Ireland. Although you will be primarily working from home, there will be travel to our offices and reserves. You will therefore need to live in the appropriate region for the role.

What's the role about?

  • Work with staff/volunteers/external parties to embed existing and new techniques, processes and systems related to environmental management to enhance efficiency, enable monitoring and reporting, and demonstrate continuous improvement.
  • Provide technical expertise and analysis of environmental performance at corporate, programme and project levels to ensure standards/guidance/strategy are developed in line with business need, industry and peer trends and RSPB strategic outcomes.
  • Contribute to the definition of, and ensure compliance with, legal, regulatory, organisational policy & frameworks and best practice standards related to environmental and carbon management.
  • Contribute to preparing papers and reports for the RSPB's governance and oversee timely reporting of environmental and carbon metrics to enable oversight of work within projects.
  • Responsibility for the management and operation of small technical/ research/ marketing projects/programmes of work and contribution to the delivery of larger projects/programmes of work.
  • Monitor and review the work of peers and occasionally contractors and external parties, to deliver project/operational work and ensure quality standards and best practices are met.

Essential knowledge, skills and experience:

1. Initiative and judgement to resolve problems independently and/or through a support team.
2. Understanding of relevant environmental and carbon legal requirements, organisational policies and procedures relative to the role, and the quality outputs, standards and accreditations required.
3. Depth or breadth of knowledge in environmental and carbon management and/or organisational sustainability.
4. Effective written and communication skills.
5. Strong people management skills and the ability to work collaboratively with peers and colleagues at all levels and in various functions.
6. Ability to influence others and explain / discuss environmental, carbon and sustainability concepts and ideas.
7. Experience of planning and progressing work activities within industry guidelines or organisational policy, occasionally applying initiative and independent judgement.
8. Bachelor's degree (or equivalent), or equivalent experience in a similar environmental and/or carbon management role.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

1. Expertise with relevant environmental and/or carbon software packages.
2. Experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
