People come to Northern for trains they can rely on. Behind every on-time departure at Leeds railway station, there’s a team working calmly, quickly and collaboratively to keep more than 1,300 services moving each day.

As part of the station delivery team, you’d be right at the centre of it all – supporting the coordination of Northern and other train operators, keeping services flowing in and out of one of the busiest stations in the North. When plans change, you’ll help make new ones. When disruption hits, you’ll help steady the ship. Your work will ripple far beyond the platforms – keeping depots, crews, control teams and customers informed in real time.

This is a role for someone who thrives on pace, precision and teamwork – and who takes real pride in making it happen when it matters most.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll support the coordination of all train services in and around Leeds station, working closely with Station Coordinators, Northern Control, Network Rail and other train operating companies.

Day to day, you’ll:

  • Assist in managing the safe and efficient movement of services operated by Northern and other operators in the Leeds area
  • Take swift, practical action during disruption or staff shortages to reduce the impact on customers – including initiating contingency unit plans
  • Help ensure full train unit diagram coverage, working alongside crew coordinators and control teams
  • Liaise with depots including Neville Hill and Holbeck to make sure trains arrive as required, including empty coaching stock, failed units, set swaps and ad hoc movements
  • Provide real-time updates to depots and train crew on arrivals, departures and additional movements
  • Coordinate re-platforming with Network Rail signalling teams and station announcers when plans change
  • Report unit defects to Maintenance Control and work with station fitters to keep trains moving safely
  • Maintain accurate written logs and support delay investigations and attribution
  • Support safe shunting activities within the station area
  • Assist with arranging alternative transport during disruption
  • Step in for the Station Coordinator at short notice when needed

You’ll also be part of the wider performance effort – identifying improvements, checking daily workings for errors, mentoring colleagues and helping refine how services operate at Leeds.

About you

Leeds station knowledge, strong communication skills and confidence under pressure – that’s the foundation.

You’ll also bring:

  • A solid understanding of how Leeds station operates and how train services fit together
  • Experience working with control systems such as TRUST, GENIUS, GEMINI, delay attribution tools and standard Microsoft systems
  • The ability to build effective working relationships with train crew, station teams, depot colleagues and Network Rail
  • A calm, clear approach when things don’t go to plan
  • A strong safety mindset and the confidence to escalate issues when required

Most of all, you understand that coordination is about people as much as processes. You can see the bigger picture while staying on top of the detail.

Why Northern?

We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North – connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,650 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, beginning a journey that would transform travel across the world. We’ve recently celebrated 200 years of the modern railway and, as we reflect on that legacy, our focus is now on the future as Great British Rail takes shape. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B - we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.
