BUSINESS FUNCTION: Customer & Commercial
SALARY: £64,000 - £71,794 /Grade:ML2/SB2
ROLE TYPE: Fixed Term (9 months)
LOCATION: York / Manchester
HOURS: 37 per week

We’re looking for an experienced Commercial Growth Manager on a fixed term basis to lead our commercial growth team and help us deliver sustainable growth in revenue and drive transformational changes to rail ticketing to improve customer confidence.

Playing a key role in Northern’s ambition to grow rail journeys by 30 million by 2030, this is a senior commercial role with real influence. You’ll lead our Product & Pricing, Revenue Management and Sales activity, putting customer insight and demand at the heart of how we make commercial decisions, and influencing across UK Rail to drive change that delivers for customers.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll take ownership of Northern’s Commercial Growth Plan, bringing together our Revenue Management, Product & Pricing and Ancillary Revenue strategies.

Working closely with colleagues across Northern and the wider rail industry, you’ll:

  • Support the development and delivery of the commercial growth strategy that increases revenue, journeys and yield through smarter product and pricing decisions.
  • Put customers and data at the heart of commercial decision-making, using customer insight, demand data and analytical evidence to shape our approach.
  • Lead our technical experts in Product & Pricing, Revenue Management and Sales teams, creating a high-performing culture and developing the talent within them.
  • Lead Northern’s commercial response to GBR fares reform, representing our interests in industry discussions and making sure changes are understood and embedded across the business.
  • Build strong relationships across the rail industry, including GBR, the Rail Delivery Group and other train operators, sharing best practice and bringing new ideas back to Northern.
  • Represent Northern at senior industry forums and commercial working groups, influencing decisions and championing the interests of our customers and our business.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for a commercially minded leader who can combine strong commercial acumen with the ability to build relationships, influence others and turn complex information into clear decisions.

You’ll have:

  • Significant experience of leading a Revenue Management function, ideally within rail, aviation, hotels, car hire or another demand-led industry.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with a proven track record of taking new growth ideas from concept to delivery.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills, with the ability to turn data and insight into practical commercial decisions.
  • Excellent influencing and collaboration skills, with the confidence to work with senior stakeholders both inside and outside the organisation.
  • Experience of leading, developing and mentoring people.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities for a team in a fast-moving environment.
  • Strong communication and showcasing skills, including the ability to explain complex commercial or technical subjects simply and clearly.
  • The drive to challenge the status quo and drive insight-led improvements for customers.
  • A degree-level qualification.

Why Northern?

We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North – connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,650 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, beginning a journey that would transform travel across the world. We’ve recently celebrated 200 years of the modern railway and, as we reflect on that legacy, our focus is now on the future as Great British Rail takes shape. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B - we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
