Job Description

Liability Underwriter

  • Join a UK Top Employer offering career development, wellbeing support and an inclusive culture where people can thrive.

  • Join our thriving Large Corporate Underwriting team, backed by NFU Mutual’s long-term stability and GI35 growth strategy, with excellent opportunities to develop.

  • Enjoy true flexibility with up to four days a week working from home, while staying connected with one energising team day in our Stratford‑upon‑Avon or Bristol office — plus one monthly meet‑up in Stratford to collaborate, celebrate wins, and stay part of our vibrant team culture.

About the role

Are you ready to take your career to the next level? NFU Mutual invites you to join our Large Corporate Insurance team, where we safeguard some of the UK’s largest and most intricate corporate clients. Our team manages accounts exceeding £100,000 and drives over £200 million in Gross Written Premium Income, placing you right at the heart of a high-performing and strategically vital area of our business.

This is an exciting opportunity to step into a Liability Underwriter role that offers a wealth of variety, challenge, and genuine impact. You’ll benefit from outstanding training, brilliant development opportunities, and a friendly, down-to-earth team culture that makes every day enjoyable.

About you

As a Liability Underwriter, you’ll take ownership of your own portfolio, leading on select cases and shaping outcomes by assessing risks, negotiating terms, and delivering high-quality underwriting decisions that uphold NFU Mutual’s trusted principles and rigorous standards.

You will be instrumental in delivering fair outcomes and exceptional service, forging strong relationships with agents, brokers, colleagues, and clients to not only meet expectations, but consistently raise the bar. You’ll bring your expertise into client conversations, supporting agents and brokers in meetings to enhance customer value, strengthen relationships, and uphold NFU Mutual’s reputation as a trusted, customer-first insurer.

Internally, this role is known as LCI Underwriter and it offers the chance to be part of a dynamic, supportive environment where your skills and ambition will truly be valued. If you’re ready for a role that rewards dedication and empowers you to make a real difference, we look forward to welcoming you to NFU Mutual.

The successful candidate will have experience underwriting large commercial liability risks gained within the UK general insurance market. This could be from an insurer or broker environment.

You will be a strong communicator with the ability to build long lasting relationships. You will be able to influence decisions and adapt your communication style to effectively present information to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.

We hope you would also be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work well within a team

  • A strategic and forward-thinking mindset.

Having a CII qualification or working towards would be desirable, however it is not essential and it is something we can support you to achieve should you join our organisation.

At NFU Mutual, we support an inclusive workplace and value all the differences that make us unique. We celebrate the creativity and innovation that comes from diverse perspectives and experiences and share a common vision of doing the right thing for our customers and employees.

We recognise that some candidates may experience barriers during the recruitment process. So, we encourage candidates to discuss any adjustments or accommodations they need to be the best they can be throughout our recruitment process.

We're proud to be a Disability Confident Employer, a Race at Work and Women in Finance Charter signatory and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, regardless of age, ethnicity, disability, neurodiversity, gender, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background.
