Job Description

Tunnel Ventilation Engineer supports the design, analysis, and delivery of ventilation systems for road, rail, metro and utility tunnels. The role involves preparing technical calculations, 1D ventilation modelling, system sizing, coordination and technical delivery across all project stages.

Job Location: Noida

Key Responsibilities:

1. Technical Engineering

· Contribute to the design and analysis of tunnel ventilation systems (TVS) for road, rail, metro and utility tunnels.

· Support the development of 1D tunnel ventilation models using industry-standard tools (e.g., Mott Tunnels, SES).

· Perform engineering calculations for:

o Airflow and pressure loss

o Fan sizing and performance assessment

o Normal, congested, maintenance and emergency (fire) operating scenarios.

· Assist with the development of design drawings, ventilation layouts, and schematics in collaboration with CAD/BIM teams.

· Awareness of relevant codes and standards such as NFPA 130, NFPA 502, BS-9992, CD352.

2. Documentation & Reporting

· Prepare clear documentation of design calculations, model inputs, assumptions, and results.

· Support the preparation of deliverables, including technical notes, reports, engineering drawings and calculations.

3. Project Delivery

· Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams.

· Participate in design reviews, risk assessment workshops, and client meetings where required.

· Assist in responding to technical queries from clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary design partners, and coordinating design changes.

4. Quality Assurance

· Follow Mott MacDonald’s quality assurance and technical governance procedures.

· Adhere to applicable project standards.

· Contribute to the continuous improvement of modelling methodologies and best practice within the ventilation team.

· Engage in learning and development activities to grow technical proficiency in tunnel ventilation engineering.

Candidate Specification:

1. Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

2. Essential Skills and Experience:

Experience

Approximately 2-3 years of experience working in tunnel ventilation simulation analysis and overall experience of minimum 5 years in related discipline with transferrable skills (e.g., HVAC, aerodynamic analysis, station building services design, building science etc).

Technical Skills

· Understanding of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer principles.

· Basic knowledge of tunnel ventilation concepts and operational modes.

· Experience with 1D modelling software and willingness to deepen expertise in tools such as Mott Tunnels or SES.

· Ability to interpret engineering drawings, ventilation schematics, and mechanical system layouts.

· Proficiency in Microsoft packages.

Soft Skills

· Strong written and verbal communication skills suitable for an engineering consultancy environment.

· Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary and multicultural team.

· Good organisational skills and the ability to manage tasks under guidance.

· Eagerness to learn, take on new challenges, and develop specialist skills.

Desirable Competencies / Skills:

· Prior involvement in tunnel, metro, or underground infrastructure projects.

· Knowledge of fire dynamics or fire life safety design.

· Familiarity with Mott MacDonald digital tools, BIM environments (Revit, Navisworks), or systems engineering processes.

· Coding and software skills.

· Familiarity with global standards and client requirements (e.g., DMRC, MMRC, HS2, TfL).

· Participation in client meetings, technical reviews, or design presentations.
