If you share that vision, even if you don’t meet every requirement listed, we’d still love to hear from you. We value potential and diverse perspectives as much as experience. Let’s explore how we can support your growth and help you take the next step in your career, while contributing to an exciting new chapter for Mott MacDonald in North America.

We are seeking a highly accomplished and motivated Technical Tunnel Lead to join our growing Toronto-based tunnelling team. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of one of the most established and respected underground infrastructure practices in North America.

For decades, our tunnelling professionals have delivered some of the industry's most complex and transformative underground projects, supporting major transit, water, wastewater, and civil infrastructure programs across Canada, the United States, and internationally. Our long-standing reputation has been built on technical excellence, innovation, and successful project delivery, making us a trusted partner on landmark infrastructure investments throughout North America.

As our project portfolio continues to grow, we are seeking a recognized tunnelling expert who can provide technical leadership on major pursuits and projects, mentor the next generation of engineers, strengthen client relationships, and help define the future direction of our tunnelling practice. This role offers the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on both our organization and the critical infrastructure that supports communities for generations to come.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the development of innovative design solutions and technical deliverables for tunnels, shafts, support of excavation systems, and underground structures.

  • Provide technical leadership and strategic direction on major underground infrastructure projects, with a particular focus on transit and water/wastewater markets.

  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to clients, project teams, and senior stakeholders.

  • Conduct constructability, risk, and biddability reviews to support successful project delivery.

  • Lead the preparation of design reports, specifications, calculations, and construction documentation.

  • Champion excellence in underground engineering practice, codes, standards, quality assurance, and design governance.

  • Establish and improve engineering processes, systems, and best practices to support efficient and high-quality project execution.

  • Manage multidisciplinary design packages and collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders throughout project delivery.

  • Build and strengthen client relationships through regular engagement, progress reporting, and strategic project support.

  • Advance the team's capabilities through innovation, digital engineering, and the implementation of emerging technologies.

  • Mentor and develop junior and intermediate engineers, fostering technical growth and leadership capabilities across the team.

What we're looking for:

The ideal candidate is a respected engineering professional with a passion for delivering technically excellent underground infrastructure projects. You are a collaborative leader who thrives on solving complex engineering challenges, building high-performing teams, and influencing the direction of major projects and programs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Geological Engineering (Master's degree considered an asset).

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in the planning, design, and construction of tunnels, shafts, and underground structures.

  • Experience leading multidisciplinary tunnel design programs and coordinating complex project teams.

  • Direct experience supporting major transit and/or water/wastewater tunnel projects; experience in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area is considered an asset.

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario, or the ability to obtain registration within a short period.

  • Demonstrated expertise in underground engineering design standards, guidelines, and industry best practices.

  • Advanced understanding of geotechnical and structural design principles and underground construction methodologies.

  • Familiarity with geotechnical and structural numerical modelling software.

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.

  • Proven ability to mentor, review, approve, and guide the work of engineering teams

At Mott MacDonald, our employees have a stake and a voice in our business, providing them with a direct connection to our success through our personal and group performance bonuses.

Multiple factors such as qualifications, overall experience and position responsibilities will be used to determine the successful candidate's actual salary within the expected range.

The expected salary range for this position is from $160,000 - $200,000.

This posting is for an existing vacancy.
