Build on your experience while helping shape what comes next. At Mott MacDonald, you'll work alongside talented people on complex and rewarding projects that make a real difference. We value fresh perspectives, encourage collaboration, and provide opportunities to expand your skills, take on new challenges, and grow your career. Whether you're deepening your technical expertise, broadening your leadership experience, or exploring new opportunities across our business, you'll be supported by a team that is committed to helping you succeed.

Mott MacDonald Canada is seeking a Systems Assurance Engineer to join its growing Rail Systems Practice in Toronto, reporting to the Systems Assurance Lead. The role will support major rail and transit infrastructure assignments for public- and private-sector clients. You will work with Canadian clients, including TransLink, Metrolinx and the TTC, and may support capital projects in the United States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, drawing on expertise from our global practices.

You will join a close-knit and diverse team within a progressive, rapidly growing organisation that values equality, diversity and inclusion. Support from the management team, together with formal and informal training, will provide opportunities for continued professional development.

The successful candidate will support the delivery of RAM, System Safety and wider assurance activities across major rail and transit projects. Working with experienced specialists and multidisciplinary engineering teams, the role will help ensure that systems are safe, reliable, maintainable and supported by appropriate assurance evidence. Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver RAM and System Safety activities across the project lifecycle
  • Prepare and contribute to RAM and System Safety plans, analyses, reports and assurance submissions
  • Undertake reliability predictions, availability assessments, maintainability assessments and Reliability Block Diagram modelling
  • Support the definition, apportionment and verification of RAM requirements and targets
  • Undertake System Safety analyses, including Preliminary Hazard Analysis, FMECA, Fault Tree Analysis and other appropriate risk assessment techniques
  • Develop, manage and maintain hazard logs, including traceability of hazards, causes, consequences, controls and safety requirements
  • Support the identification, specification and verification of safety requirements
  • Participate in and, where appropriate, facilitate hazard identification and risk assessment workshops
  • Support Safety Integrity Level determination and allocation, including associated safety integrity targets
  • Contribute to safety cases, safety justification reports and other assurance evidence
  • Assess compliance with relevant project requirements, standards and assurance processes, including EN 50126 and applicable Canadian railway risk evaluation methods
  • Collaborate with systems engineering, design, operations, maintenance and project delivery teams
  • Engage with clients, contractors, suppliers, Independent Safety Assessors and other stakeholders
  • Support bids, proposals and technical scopes as required

Candidate Specifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, science or a related technical discipline
  • At least 5 to 8 years’ relevant experience in Systems Assurance, RAMS, System Safety or a related field
  • You will have delivered RAM or System Safety activities on rail, transit or other safety-critical infrastructure projects and understand the systems engineering lifecycle, including the V-model, requirements management, verification and validation
  • Practical experience is required in at least three of the following areas:
    • RAM planning and analysis
    • Reliability and availability modelling
    • RAM Demonstration
    • Hazard identification and management
    • System Safety analysis
    • Safety case development
    • SIL determination and allocation
  • We are seeking an adaptable, proactive professional with strong written and verbal communication skills who can work effectively with colleagues, clients and multidisciplinary teams
  • You will understand relevant RAMS and System Safety standards, particularly EN 50126. Familiarity with EN 50128, EN 50129 and CSA R114 – Canadian Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment for Railway Systems would be beneficial. You should also be able to explain technical information clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences, manage priorities and deadlines with limited supervision, and apply a methodical, detail-focused approach to problem-solving.
  • Preferred qualifications
    • Professional Engineer registration in Ontario, or eligibility to work towards registration
    • Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution

Bring your expertise, curiosity, and drive to make a difference. If you are ready to join a collaborative consultancy where your perspective is valued, your growth is supported, and you are empowered to lead with integrity, we would love to hear from you.
