Mott MacDonald is looking to hire a motivated individual to join our growing team in Toronto in order to develop, support, and provide oversight on the execution of Signaling and Train Control Systems projects for rail and transit systems. As part of our wider Rail Systems Team spanning Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto, this position provides the opportunity to contribute to the growth of our Ontario operations, including collaboration with other subject matter experts across various projects, occasionally witnessing works on active construction sites, and contributing to long-term business development opportunities. This role will report to the Rail Systems Lead for Central Canada.

Working within Mott MacDonald's Rail Systems practice, the successful candidate will be supported by senior signalling, systems engineering, testing and commissioning specialists across Canada and North America to further develop technical and project leadership capabilities. The position offers a clear development pathway towards Signalling Lead and Project Manager responsibilities.

  • Support design efforts and provide oversight on signalling and train control systems for heavy rail, passenger rail, and transit projects
  • Review signaling system designs, specifications, installation, and testing plans for compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and guidelines
  • Provide technical advisory services and input to clients in the development of system requirements and contract documents for signaling and train control systems projects
  • Support testing, commissioning, migration, cutover, and operational readiness activities, occasionally necessitating attendance on site
  • Contribute to the development, adoption, and delivery of railway signaling design processes within Mott MacDonald’s North American practices
  • Lead the signalling elements of project bids and project delivery within Mott MacDonald Canada, including interfacing with Infrastructure Design, Project and Systems Engineering teams together with budget development as necessary
  • Apply lessons learned and advise on necessary corrective actions for ongoing projects
  • Provide technical support to teams at all stages of the Project life cycle
  • Develop and work with key delivery partners and service providers for projects
  • Engage with end clients as and when necessary


Candidate Specifications:

  • Bachelors Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering/Science (preferably Electrical/Mechanical/Systems Engineering)
  • At least 7 years’ progressive experience in Signals design, specification, installation, or maintenance with significant experience in heavy rail or passenger rail and transit projects
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation from PEO, or eligible for license
  • Demonstrable experience in one or more of the following, with awareness of the remainder:
    • Conventional signalling systems
    • Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC)
    • Positive Train Control (PTC)
    • European Train Control System (ETCS)
  • Experience working on Canadian, American, UK, Australian, or other international railway systems
  • Demonstrable strength in a minimum of one of the following, with awareness of the remainder:
    • AREMA Standards
    • IEC 15288: 2015
    • Systems Integration and Interface Management
    • IEEE 1474.1
    • CENELEC - EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129
  • Shows strong written and verbal communication skills and English fluency
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplined team
  • Able to hold competent technical discussions with Client representatives
  • Able to interface with domain specialists, design managers and construction project managers, in a competent professional manner

The expected salary range for this position is from $99,000 - $134,000
