Job Description

Location/s: Thailand

Mott MacDonald is a global engineering, management, and development consultancy committed to delivering impactful work that shapes the future.

We are a team of over 20,000 experts working across more than 50 countries worldwide.

Our success is powered by our brilliant people, who bring a diverse range of skills, experiences, and viewpoints to achieve extraordinary results. As a proudly employee-owned business, we prioritise fairness, integrity, and the wellbeing of our team.

We offer numerous opportunities for learning, growth and excellence, ensuring that everyone feels empowered, supported and valued. Join us and be part of a connected global team where you can pursue your ambitions and have the platform to be brilliant.

Thailand and the wider East Asia region have a diverse and evolving power generation market, with continued investment in conventional and low-carbon thermal generation alongside the energy transition. Mott MacDonald’s established Thailand office supports energy projects across East Asia and internationally. Our consultants have developed strong technical and commercial expertise and are recognised in the market through the successful delivery of client projects.

We are looking for a Senior Energy Engineer specialised in Thermal Power Generation to join our Energy team in Thailand. The role will focus on the development, assessment, design and delivery of thermal power generation projects, working with clients including project developers, owners, investors and lenders.

You will have the opportunity to work on a range of thermal and low-carbon power generation technologies, including:

  • Combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) and open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) power plants
  • Biomass and biogas power generation
  • Waste-to-energy (WtE) facilities
  • Geothermal power generation
  • Cogeneration and combined heat and power (CHP) plants
  • Other conventional and emerging low-carbon thermal power generation technologies
  • etc

The role will involve both technical delivery and project management across a range of power generation projects globally, with a particular focus on Thailand and the Asia-Pacific region. Working with multidisciplinary teams across Mott MacDonald, you will provide technical advisory and owner’s engineering services throughout different stages of project development and implementation.

Depending on your experience, assignments may include feasibility studies, technology and configuration assessment, technical due diligence, concept and design review, tender and contractor evaluation, owner’s engineering, construction and commissioning support, and operational or performance assessments.

As part of our Thailand team, you will have opportunities to:

  • Work on high-profile thermal and low-carbon power generation projects in Thailand, across the region and internationally
  • Provide technical input across the development, design, procurement, construction, commissioning and operational stages of power generation projects
  • Contribute to feasibility studies, technical due diligence, owner’s engineering and other technical advisory assignments
  • Review plant concepts, designs, equipment selections, technical specifications and contractor proposals
  • Assess key aspects of power plant performance, efficiency, reliability, availability and operability
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams covering mechanical, electrical, civil, environmental and other specialist disciplines
  • Contribute to both technical delivery and project management
  • Collaborate with specialists across our Asia and global offices
  • Support the development, securing and delivery of opportunities for Thai and international clients
  • Take responsibility for defined technical workstreams and support the technical development of junior engineers
  • Contribute to business development activities and preparation of technical and commercial proposals

Candidate Specification

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, energy engineering, chemical engineering, power engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline
  • At least five years of relevant experience in thermal power generation, gained within an engineering consultancy, project developer, utility, power plant owner/operator, EPC contractor, OEM or other relevant organisation
  • Demonstrated experience with one or more thermal power generation technologies, such as CCGT/OCGT, biomass, biogas, waste-to-energy, geothermal or cogeneration/CHP
  • Good understanding of thermal power plant systems and major equipment, which may include gas turbines, steam turbines, boilers/HRSGs, generators, balance-of-plant systems and associated electrical and mechanical systems
  • Experience in one or more areas such as feasibility studies, engineering design, technical due diligence, owner’s engineering, EPC tendering and evaluation, construction, commissioning, operations or performance assessment
  • Experience working with major plant performance parameters such as heat rate, efficiency, output, availability and reliability would be advantageous
  • Knowledge of fuel supply, fuel characteristics and their implications for plant design and performance would be advantageous, particularly for biomass, biogas and waste-to-energy projects
  • Experience with decarbonisation or emerging thermal technologies, such as hydrogen-ready generation, carbon capture or alternative fuels, would be welcomed
  • Excellent written and spoken English, for example equivalent to a TOEIC score of 800 or above or an IELTS score of 6.5 or above
  • Experience contributing to technical delivery and project management in an international, multicultural environment
  • Strong technical understanding and the ability to solve complex engineering problems
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking and numerical skills
