Job Description

Mott MacDonald are world leaders in the design, development and delivery of underground transportation schemes both in the UK and overseas. This includes metros systems, rail and road tunnels.

We are currently looking for a Senior CFD Engineer from the GDS location in India to work with our CFD team based in Croydon/London.

We conduct CFD studies for a range of applications such as fire and smoke spread in tunnels and stations, ventilation and heating of facilities, wind engineering, pedestrian comfort analysis and hydraulic modelling of water utility installations. We also provide fluid dynamics and heat transfer advice and support to other teams within the business.

You will be required to act as a senior CFD modeller on projects, leading CFD tasks and undertaking simulations, involving fluid mechanics and multi-physics engineering analyses, together with supportive verification and validation activities. You may also be asked to support less experienced team members in the delivery of project tasks.

You will be participating in project meetings involving internal and external clients/stakeholders, supporting requirements of different engineering projects. As part of your responsibilities, you will be expected to present work and lead discussions on tasks and aspects of CFD projects, for which you lead.

It is expected that you will manage tasks effectively and efficiently, ensuring that all work is delivered to high quality and best practice standards, together with budgets and deliverable time scales. Frequently, projects will require close liaising with technical teams in other areas such as tunnel ventilation, fire engineering, mechanical engineering design, building design, water and wind engineering, which are often widespread geographically. You would be expected to provide high quality reporting of the work you lead in terms of technical notes and full study engineering reports, providing project output and deliverables matching client’s requirements.

You will be encouraged to develop your advanced consulting skills with a view to undertaking tasks of increasing complexity in terms of technical solutions and task coordination and management of resources. In undertaking your duties there will be continuous interfacing and support provided from your colleagues in the CFD team and wider teams which you will be a part of.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform advanced CFD studies for a wide range of projects, including those involving airflow, heat transfer, contaminant dispersion such as fire and smoke spread in car parks, tunnels, and stations, as well as indoor/outdoor thermal comfort analysis for HVAC applications.

  • Participating in project technical meetings involving internal clients/stakeholders, supporting the requirements of different projects.

  • Carrying out essential engineering calculations such as determining design fire parameters (HRR and fire curves) and conducting ASET/RSET evaluations.

  • Develop team skill set by providing required training and guidance to peers and reporters.

  • Collaboration/ coordination with other discipline’s counterparts to integrate CFD insights into design solutions.

  • As well as having excellent technical skills you would be expected to have effective communication skills and high standards in report writing.

Candidate Specification

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Mechanical engineering degree (master’s degree in aerodynamics, numerical analysis and thermal engineering will be preferred)

  • Master’s/PhD from a reputable/recognised university is advantageous though not essential.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Atleast 8+ years of total expereince and Minimum 4–5 years of CFD experience using ANSYS Space-Claim, Fluent, FDS, CFD Post and Star-CCM+ etc. For fire modelling and thermal analysis applications.

  • Skilled in developing modelling strategies, interpreting results, and delivering actionable recommendations.

  • Strong communicator with clear technical writing and presentation abilities.

  • strong hands-on experience and leadership of CFD analysis tasks in project oriented or design environments, demonstrating complex problem solving, meeting stringent client needs (quality / delivery /budget)

  • Support and training of less experienced team members in CFD modelling tasks you’ve led

  • Advanced level use and expertise of general purpose CFD codes such as Fluent, Star-CCM+ etc.

  • Advanced level use and expertise with user routines involving for example C++, Python, Java, Fortran etc.

  • Advanced level use of Macro & Scripts for automation in industrial type engineering problem solving

  • Developing suitable models from 3D CAD geometries, generating high quality mesh.

  • Develop CFD methodologies for Multiphysics projects capturing appropriate physics, boundary conditions and selecting appropriate numerical methods for model setup.

  • Conducting robust CFD simulations and carefully monitoring them, as well as interpreting the outputs and performing validation and verification to ensure the results are accurate and reliable.

  • Extracting key insights and conclusions related to the engineering problems addressed, and preparing comprehensive technical reports.

Desirable Competencies / Skills:

  • Experience in CFD fluid flow modelling, and hydraulic modelling projects.

  • Delivered simulation projects using FDS and Ansys Fluent/CFX.

  • Basic understanding of 1D simulations, knowledge of boundary conditions, and application of 1D results in CFD analysis to provide meaningful results. SES and IDA tunnels proficiency will be considered an added advantage.

  • Working knowledge of Python, C++, VBA for integration with Mott MacDonald’s digital solutions and coding requirement of simulation projects.

  • Hands-on experience with User defined functions (UDF’s) and energy modelling software e.g. IES-VE.

  • Design optimisation in CFD analyses.

  • Considerations for AI in CFD applications.

  • Familiarity with the key application areas in the team (ventilation, fire, wind, buildings and water).
