The Energy Unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including nuclear, transmission & distribution networks and Energy Transition. We provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition.

The Energy, Thermal and Renewables (ETR) Division is responsible for providing technical, environmental and management consulting services in relation to hydropower, thermal, wind and solar technologies. We are a multidisciplinary Division supporting our global clients across all the phases of their projects, from early development towards operations. We provide technical advisory, owner’s engineer and detailed design services fulfilling the specific requirements of our client’s projects. Our Division blend skills from our team of electrical, mechanical, civil, environmental, social, carbon specialists and project managers bringing this together with the rich and diverse skills available within our wider business as needed for our projects.

Mott MacDonald has been actively involved in the German market through exciting initiatives such as: offshore hydrogen projects, hydrogen-ready thermal assets, BESS development, and wind farm transactions.

We are currently building our permanent in-country presence, and are now looking to hire an Business Development Manager to drive our growth and profitability of our Energy Transition business. This is a fantastic change-led opportunity to own and grow a successful portfolio, facilitating a proactive approach and offer in the German market, leveraging and balancing our historical relationships and capabilities.

By combining our international expertise with local and national insight, we are aiming to deliver high quality engineering solutions and exceptional value to our clients and the German market. To lead this transformation, we are seeking an individual who has a clear understanding of the Energy Transition market and a leader who can serve as the vital link between our European organisation and new German operations.

Reporting to the ETR Divisional Development Manager, you will work with Account Leaders regarding specific bids and projects as well as contributing to the leadership of the German team. You will create growth opportunities through strong client relationships, successful bids and management of projects.

This is a unique opportunity for entrepreneurial professionals who are energised by the challenge of building something from the ground up. You will play a key role in shaping national teams, developing a robust project pipeline, and forging strategic partnerships.


Overview of the role
You will be responsible for identifying key growth areas, fostering client relationships, leading our sector focus, building a client centric experience and assisting the operational performance of the portfolio in alignment with our Divisional business plan and strategy.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the energy sector, a wide client network, excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills, and a deep understanding of the energy markets and growth trends. The ability to prioritise, influence and collaborate is fundamental, substantiated by subject matter expertise and a drive for excellence and results.

You will be expected to own several client accounts and to take accountability and provide consolidated reporting for the aggregate performance of all these accounts. Also, you will collaborate with Resource Managers to ensure that projects within their portfolio are properly resourced, with the right people in the right project roles.

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Developing a portfolio strategy aligning with the region sector focus, Division and Unit business plan
  • Developing strong and robust client relationships, both externally and internally
  • Identifying opportunities and turning them into prospects
  • Driving the bidding process, converting prospects into projects, ensuring bids are technically and commercially sound
  • Overseeing the delivery of commercially robust projects and quality outcomes for clients to budget on schedule through project teams
  • Managing risk and commercial performance on the projects for their Portfolio. The Portfolio Lead is likely to have several Bid and Project Principals working with them in their portfolio
  • Promoting the services across the wider business
  • Working effectively with the Resource Managers and Project Technical Leaders/Practice Leaders to bring the right resources to deliver projects to the client’s satisfaction and meeting Mott MacDonald’s profit or contribution targets
  • Identifying resource needs/gaps for current and future project and service delivery and working with the Resource Managers to enable effective recruitment and long-term resourcing
  • Identify opportunities, in collaboration with Resource Managers and the Technical Excellence Lead for alternative resourcing including GDS and supply chain as well as digital solutions
  • Develop relationships with sector partners who align with our skills and culture to bid for and deliver projects
  • Addressing client’s issues and fulfilling their aspirations on environment, sustainability and social
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing market dynamics


Candidate specification
The ideal candidate will have:

  • In-depth knowledge of the German national market drivers and the competitive landscape
  • Strong networking skills, be a collaborator with national and international partner consultancies
  • Extensive experience in the energy transition sector, a wide client network, excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills, and a deep understanding of the energy markets and growth trends
  • The ability to prioritise, influence and collaborate, with a drive for excellence and results
  • The ability to own several client accounts and to take accountability and provide consolidated reporting for the aggregate performance of all these accounts
  • Natural leadership skills enabling culture setting of a collaborative and high-performance environment, motivating and empowering teams
  • A strong business and commercial focused mindset
  • Fluent German business language skills
  • Fluent English business language skills

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Have a Degree in a relevant Engineering subject
  • Chartered Engineer or Professionally registered and a member of a relevant Institute
  • Proven success in the delivery of power generation projects working for a consultant, designer, a contractor, or major industry client within the energy sector
  • Experience of managing large multidisciplinary proposals
  • Knowledge and experience in change, risk, project, schedule and cost management
  • Ability to make complex decisions, ensuring policies and procedures are adhered to, accepting responsibility for own actions
  • A commitment to promoting health, safety, and wellbeing in the workplace Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to adapt and work on multiple proposals simultaneously in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Collaborative skills: the role of the Portfolio Lead requires that they work with cross-functional teams, so it is vital that they can work with people from various backgrounds

Preferred but not essential:

  • Experience across all stages of the project lifecycle
