Champion Petfoods is expanding! We are excited to announce we are looking for a Shunt Truck Operator to join our rapidly growing company.

Here's the Scoop – Summary

The Shunt Truck Operator is responsible for facilitating timely and efficient movement of trailer equipment into and out of the kitchen door docks, supporting both the inbound reception of goods as well as the outbound shipment of goods. They are also responsible for management of trailer inventory in the yard, keeping an up-to-date manifest of all trailers as well as their content, seal information, and location. This is for a 6 month contract, with the possibility to extend to 12 months.

What a typical day looks like:

  • Ensure compliance to Company’s policies, practices and procedures related to Health and Safety, Food Safety, and the Environment
  • Responsible to maintain a neat and orderly storage lot oriented toward maximizing efficiency in servicing the kitchen needs, shuttling trailers into and out of doors
  • Operate Shunt Truck in a safe manner during numerous load/offload procedures daily involving loaded and empty containers, particularly in tight spaces and between other containers
  • Be cognizant of the reality that the operation is a low mileage severe duty function requiring attention to preventive maintenance checks and services as well as actual scheduled vehicle maintenance
  • Must be aware that operations occur on asphalt, concrete, and/or gravel, in an environment with fluctuating temperatures
  • Responsible for accounting for records involving container numbers, gross weights, tare weights, and net weights on the log sheet to include source and type of material
  • Must function and interact daily with kitchen personnel and comply with kitchen safety and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) requirements
  • Communicate using cellular telephone or 2-way radio with warehouse, operations, and kitchen personnel
  • Security of valuable commodities and the storage area itself are a major area of concern for the shunt truck operator, occasionally requiring guidance from supervisory personnel regarding disposition
  • Duties and Tasks as assigned by supervisor/manager

What are we looking for?

  • Valid Class 1 driver’s license with Air Brake certification and a clean driver’s abstract
  • Two to five years’ experience as a shunt truck or tractor/trailer operator
  • Experience in the warehouse industry preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken
  • Basic mathematical skills
  • Ability to work efficiently as a part of a team as well as independently
  • Attention to detail in all areas of work
  • Good organizational, time management, and prioritizing skills
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude
  • Ability to pass a Drug & Alcohol and Fit-to-Work test up to 75 lbs
  • Ability to clear a Criminal Record Check and provide references

Working Conditions:

  • Work environment is in a pet food distribution centre, with exposure to dust, noise, and fluctuating temperatures
  • Overtime and Saturdays as required
  • Working Monday – Friday 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM
  • Must be able to physically inspect company equipment, property, and assets
  • Regularly required to work at heights; fall arrest training to be provided by the Company
  • Manual dexterity required to perform repairs on various types of equipment, and regular computer use
