HSSE Advisor – JL3

Would you like to be part of a value‑driven, safety‑focused international environment where we enable global trade every day? We have an opportunity for an HSSE Advisor (JL3) to join our team and support safe, compliant, and sustainable warehouse and distribution operations.

The HSSE Advisor will be responsible for implementing, maintaining, and continuously improving risk management, health, safety, security, and environmental practices at the operational site. The role works closely with warehouse management and operations teams to ensure all business objectives are achieved in a safe and compliant manner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement risk management processes, procedures, and protocols at the relevant operational site.

  • Maintain compliance with risk management protocols, policies, and procedures by ensuring legal appointments are up to date, legal systems/ training is scheduled, safety registers/ checklists are conducted, risk meetings are conducted (monthly), contractors are managed, statistics are managed

  • Compile and review operational site risk assessments as and when required.

  • Utilise risk assessment results to facilitate the implementation of preventative and corrective measures.

  • Ensure compliance with Company safety regulations and adherence to safety standards, including safety induction and training

  • Inspect the place of work to determine whether any machinery, plant, equipment, substance, appliances or process is liable to cause bodily injury to any person working in the place of work

  • Ensure Business Continuity Management (BCM) Plans are in place, reviewed and implemented

  • Ensure Crisis Management Plans (CMP) are in place, reviewed and implemented

  • Ensure Emergency Response Plans (ERP) are in place, reviewed and implemented

  • Support sustainability by timeous and accurate capturing of SHEQ statistics and conducting audits as and when required.

  • Ensure that all non-conformances are timeously reported, investigated, and attended to within the prescribed time by using the company approved system.

  • Conduct incident and accident investigations and reviews in line with company policies and procedures.

  • Conduct internal risk audits in accordance with company policy and procedure to ensure good governance and compliance.

  • Liaise with Department of Employment and Labour as and when required i.e., regarding Sec 24 incidents

  • Compile monthly risk reports according to company standards and requirements.

  • Minute and track actions emanating from monthly warehouse HSSE meetings.

  • Perform Site Inductions for Visitors and Contractors.

  • Capture non-conformances on the Fatal5 system, and track closure rates by assignee and department.

  • Work with the operations team to implement the site specific PMP, further to ensuring alignment by the PMP to all regulatory expectations.

  • Conduct Critical Task Analysis for all warehouse activities and draft SWI’s accordingly to reduce overall task risk.

  • Develop, implement and drive continuous improvement the site specific TMP (Traffic Management Plan).

  • Ensure that all legal appointments for the warehouse team is up to date and in place.

  • Facilitate HSSE related training and ensure that all training registers are filed to evidence competencies.

  • Monitor contractor compliance to active PTW’s.

  • Develop, implement, and drive continuous improvement of the warehouse QMS such as the 5S system.

  • Conduct various RA’s based on the specific business environment needs, review and implement Risk Reduction Plans

  • Maintain a sound, “audit-ready” filing system, aligned to an ISO:45001, ISO:14001, and ISO:9001 auditing protocol.

  • Conduct daily toolbox meetings with site personnel.

  • Align the external security SOP with internal Maersk requirements, and operational expectations from warehouse management, and monitor compliance thereto.

  • Work closely with the warehouse management team to ensure that all operational objectives is achieved in a safe manner.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Someone with:

  • National Diploma in Safety and/or Environmental Management and/or Risk Management or Equivalent.

  • Certificate in safety management (SHEMTRAC, SAMTRAC, NEBOSH IGC, etc)

  • Professional registration with SAIOSH and SACPCMP (Advantageous).

  • Practical understanding of the implementation and maintenance of ISO 14001, 9001 & 45001.

  • 3-5 years’ experience in a warehousing and distribution environment in a full-time health & safety role, across multiple sites.

  • Extensive knowledge of the OHS Act & Regulations.
