Role- Electrical Specialist – RTG / RMGC / STS Maintenance

The Electrical Specialist is responsible for ensuring the safety, integrity, reliability, and compliance of all electrical and electronic systems associated with terminal equipment, particularly RTG, RMGC, and STS cranes. The role acts as the terminal’s focal point for electrical engineering expertise, providing guidance, governance, and technical leadership while supporting operational excellence and continuous improvement.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE)

  • Ensure full compliance with HSSE policies, procedures, and safe systems of work

  • Enforce LOTO procedures and electrical safety standards across all activities

  • Promote a strong safety culture and actively contribute to incident-free operations

  • Participate in incident investigations and drive corrective and preventive actions

Operational & Technical Performance

  • Act as subject matter expert for all electrical and electronic systems of RTG, RMGC, and STS cranes

  • Enhance electrical maintenance practices through coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance

  • Develop and manage preventive maintenance strategies to improve equipment reliability

  • Troubleshoot complex failures in drives, PLCs, networks, and crane control systems

  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for critical failures and implement permanent solutions

  • Manage electrical modifications, upgrades, and retrofit projects (in-house or outsourced)

  • Conduct or coordinate audits, inspections, and technical surveys

  • Provide expert input for technical procurement and vendor evaluations

  • Ensure compliance with APMT electrical integrity management policies

Strategy & Asset Integrity

  • Support medium- to long-term asset renewal and refurbishment planning

  • Contribute to global electrical maintenance strategy and continuous improvement programs

  • Work cross-functionally to sustain asset integrity and optimize lifecycle cost

  • Support electrification, automation, and modernization initiatives

Resource & Contractor Management

  • Manage day-to-day activities of contractors and internal teams for electrical works

  • Ensure quality, safety, and compliance in all outsourced activities

  • Develop and manage specialist maintenance and repair contracts

People & Communication

  • Organize and facilitate electrical safety training and technical upskilling

  • Participate actively in APMT’s global electrical engineering community

  • Benchmark terminal capabilities and drive continuous learning

  • Maintain strong communication with operations, maintenance, and other stakeholders

  • Promote APMT values, ethics, and business principles

Cost Management

  • Drive cost optimization initiatives without compromising safety or reliability

  • Support terminals in implementing efficient electrical maintenance practices

  • Monitor maintenance cost trends and propose improvement actions

CRITICAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

Education & Certification

  • Degree / Diploma in Electrical or Electronics Engineering (mandatory)

  • Membership of a recognized professional engineering body (preferred)

Technical Competencies

  • Strong expertise in RTG, RMG, and STS crane electrical & automation systems

  • Advanced troubleshooting of:

    • AC/DC drives, VFDs, servo drives, soft starters

    • PLC systems (Siemens S7, Allen-Bradley, Schneider, etc.)

    • HMI, SCADA, crane control systems

    • Industrial communication networks (Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, CANbus)

  • Experience with crane safety systems: anti-collision, anti-sway, overload, interlocks, limit switches

  • Condition monitoring techniques:

    • Thermal imaging

    • Insulation resistance testing

    • Earth resistance testing

  • Strong understanding of motors, slip rings, electrical panels, and power distribution

  • Development and execution of PM strategies for crane electrical systems

  • Documentation management: schematics, PLC backups, manuals, failure history

  • ERP exposure (CMMS/SAP or equivalent) with strong data discipline

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ hands-on experience in container terminal equipment (RTG, RMG, STS)

  • Proven exposure to asset maintenance, reliability improvement, and breakdown management

  • Experience in 24/7 operational environments with high availability expectations

  • Strong service mindset with stakeholder management capability

  • Effective written and verbal communication in English
