Job Description

Who We Are

Element is the startup which employs the core team behind matrix.org— the leading project for secure, open decentralised communication.

Matrix’s mission is to make messaging as open as email— allowing everyone to choose where their data is hosted, enjoy private conversations thanks to advanced encryption, and ultimately be in control of their own communication.

The Matrix protocol is used by millions of people globally, from the French and German governments through to community groups and open source projects like Mozilla, KDE, GNOME and Wikimedia.

Matrix powers Element, our flagship messaging apps for the web, iOS & Android, along with EMS, our SaaS platform for personal & professional use.

We build things for everyone, and we know we can’t succeed without a diverse team. Our hiring process is designed to be humane and give candidates the best chance to show us what you can do. If we ever fall down on this, please let us know.

The Role

Third Room is a project funded by Element. It is a platform for open, decentralized, immersive worlds, built on Matrix. We’re building a web-based 3D app that lets you quickly hop between virtual worlds used by communities for events, education, applications, and games. Third Room worlds can be created by anyone, but we will be setting the bar high with our own 3D environments, avatars, and experiences.

We’re looking for a 3D generalist to join as the first artist on the Third Room team. You will work with the rest of the team to brainstorm, design, and deliver the assets for Third Room’s initial release and beyond. Being the first artist, you’ll also be largely responsible for defining the overall look of Third Room’s 3D content.

Third Room is a browser-based virtual world platform used across mobile, desktop, and VR devices. As such it has unique performance requirements. Our art pipeline uses Unity3D and in-house tools to create and optimize content. You will work alongside the engineering team to perfect the art pipeline for your own workflow and for the rest of the community.

The most important thing is that you’re passionate about making art that reflects a vision of an open, equitable, and decentralized network of virtual worlds. One that is owned and controlled by individuals rather than a small number of large corporations.
